However, in season 2, episode 7 of Daredevil: Born Again, titled “The Hateful Darkness,” Daniel unexpectedly chose to protect BB and showed up to meet Buck without the person he’d promised to deliver. In a surprising turn of events, Buck then killed Daniel.

I’ve really noticed Daniel and Buck becoming close friends this season, and it’s been heartwarming to see Buck open up a bit – especially with Heather and how kind he’s been to Daniel. Why Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 Killed Off Daniel (Despite The Original Plan To Keep Him Alive)

Michael Gandolfini, who plays Daniel Blake, shared that the episode didn’t originally end with his character’s death. The initial plan was for Daniel to persuade Buck to let him live, and they even filmed that scene, along with additional scenes for episode 8, before the showrunners ultimately decided to kill him off in episode 7.

It seems the decision was made because both the writers and James Gandolfini were unsure about the character’s future direction. Since his loyalties were shifting – balancing work with Fisk and pursuing a relationship with BB Ulrich – the story might have naturally led him to leave the show anyway, and a simple departure wouldn’t have felt satisfying.

Instead of leaving Daniel’s fate uncertain, the writers gave him a chance to be a hero by risking his life to save BB, even though she had hurt him. This scene also highlighted how loyal Buck Cashman is to the Kingpin, as he was willing to kill a friend to satisfy his boss and prevent Daniel from escaping.

How Daredevil: Born Again’s Daniel Twist Changes Season 3

Daniel Blake’s fate was closely connected to Wilson Fisk, his allies, and BB Ulrich. If he hadn’t died quickly, his story would have likely changed so much that it would have overshadowed the main plotlines already unfolding.

Currently, characters like Matt Murdock, Karen Page, Wilson Fisk, and others – including Heather Glenn, Buck Cashman, Benjamin Poindexter, Angela del Toro, Kristin McDuffie, and even Jessica Jones – are key players and will likely be central to the season 2 finale and the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again season. Adding Daniel and BB’s storyline, alongside any other new plot threads, would spread the focus too thin and distract from these main characters.

Daniel could have easily disappeared without a trace, but that would have diminished his impact on the story. Instead, making him a hero in his last moments completed his character development in a truly rewarding way, and significantly strengthened the overall narrative.

While Michael Gandolfini’s departure from Daredevil: Born Again is disappointing, it ultimately serves the story well. It creates emotional weight and sets the stage for compelling character development as the show explores themes of loss and recovery in the upcoming season.
