If you enjoy shows like One Piece and Stranger Things, you should definitely check out another Netflix series that deserves more attention. It’s not surprising One Piece became a hit when it arrived in 2023 – the original manga and anime by Eiichiro Oda were already incredibly popular, and the story of Monkey D. Luffy and his crew had broad appeal.
When Stranger Things debuted in 2016, it was hard to know just how popular it would become, but it clearly had the potential to be a big hit. The show combined a nostalgic feel with a great soundtrack, and blended several genres – small-town mystery, horror, science fiction, and character-driven drama – all supported by a fantastic cast of both rising stars and established actors. Unlike some of Netflix’s more obscure and underappreciated shows, like Everything Sucks, Stranger Things was a show that audiences could easily get excited about.
With the huge popularity of shows like One Piece and Stranger Things, it’s disappointing when a similar show doesn’t find a large audience. Sweet Tooth, based on Jeff Lemire’s comic book, was a fantasy series set after a virus devastated the human population. In this world, human-animal hybrids are now common, and the story follows Gus, a deer-human hybrid, as he searches for his mother after his father dies.
Sweet Tooth Nails The Same Balance Of Peril And Whimsy As Stranger Things And One Piece
Featuring a talented cast including Will Forte, Rosalind Chao, Amy Seimetz, Kelly Marie Tran, and Aliza Vellani, Sweet Tooth successfully combined dark and heartwarming elements, similar to One Piece and Stranger Things. Unlike some shows that gained popularity after Stranger Things, like the It prequel Welcome to Derry, which focused on increasing the horror, Sweet Tooth chose a different path.
Similar to his later works, Riddle of Fire and Bookworm, Sweet Tooth told its unique and surprising story through the eyes of an innocent child, while still exploring complex and serious topics. Creator Jim Mickle had previously directed the dark thriller Cold in July and the unsettling horror film We Are What We Are, making the charming yet dangerous tone of Sweet Tooth particularly noteworthy.
Sweet Tooth Never Became As Big As Stranger Things And One Piece (But It Should Have)
It’s no surprise that fans of One Piece often used clips from the show Sweet Tooth in their fan edits and artwork. Despite its darker themes, Sweet Tooth perfectly captured a heartwarming feeling similar to that of Stranger Things and One Piece. The show was highly praised during its three seasons, rightfully winning eight Children’s and Family Emmy Awards and receiving a total of 34 nominations.
Despite its unique style, Sweet Tooth didn’t reach the same level of popularity as shows like One Piece or Stranger Things. However, it arguably maintained a more consistent quality than Stranger Things, which sometimes had uneven episodes. Fortunately, all 24 episodes are still available on Netflix, so anyone who hasn’t seen it can discover what all the excitement is about. Sweet Tooth is touching, funny, a little creepy at times, and consistently captivating – it truly deserves to be considered one of Netflix’s best shows for viewers of all ages, alongside One Piece and Stranger Things.
