Tom Cruise has been a major movie star for nearly 50 years, excelling in both critically acclaimed films and huge action franchises. Despite his success, he’s never actually won an Academy Award. He received an honorary Oscar this year, which is often seen as a lifetime achievement award, but he’s never been recognized with a competitive Oscar.
I’ve always felt Tom Cruise deserved an Oscar! He was nominated three times in the ’90s – for Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, and even as a supporting actor in Magnolia. But he kept losing to some really tough competition – Daniel Day-Lewis, Geoffrey Rush, and Michael Caine, all incredible actors. Honestly, it’s been a while since he was nominated as an actor himself. He finally got one recently, but it was as a producer when Top Gun: Maverick was nominated for Best Picture, which was great, but I’m still hoping he gets recognized for his acting soon!
With the conclusion of the Mission: Impossible series, Tom Cruise is returning to the kind of acting roles he excelled at earlier in his career. For the last 14 years, he’s focused on large-scale action films with incredible stunts, which have been entertaining, but his work was more varied and compelling when he took on characters like Les Grossman, Frank T.J. Mackey, or even his parody of Austin Powers. His most recent role where he fully embodied a character, rather than being primarily an action star, was Stacee Jaxx in the 2012 film Rock of Ages.
Tom Cruise is switching things up this year, moving away from action blockbusters to star in a dark and quirky comedy directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu. Details about the film, called Digger, are scarce, but I’m already confident enough to predict that Tom Cruise will win the Best Actor Oscar in 2027.
Why Tom Cruise Could Finally Win An Oscar For Digger
The new movie, Digger, starring Tom Cruise, features him in a particularly quirky role. He plays Digger Rockwell, a hugely powerful man who tries to be seen as a hero, even as his actions threaten to destroy everything. Interestingly, the film’s themes feel especially relevant now, after a recent post by a president showed an AI-generated image of himself as Jesus, even before the movie’s October 2nd release.
The film boasts a strong supporting cast including Sandra Hüller, Jesse Plemons, John Goodman, and Riz Ahmed, but it’s really a showcase for Tom Cruise, and many believe this will be the role that finally earns him an Oscar. Early footage shown at CinemaCon has generated a lot of excitement, and director Iñárritu has a proven track record of winning Oscars for his lead actors – like Leonardo DiCaprio in The Revenant and nearly for Michael Keaton in Birdman. Adding to this, the story of Cruise returning to serious acting after focusing on action films could fuel a successful awards campaign similar to Brendan Fraser’s. Everything suggests Tom Cruise is poised to win Best Actor.
Cruise Has Always Been A Character Actor In A Leading Man’s Body
Similar to Brad Pitt in Interview with the Vampire, Tom Cruise has the appearance and charisma of a leading man, capable of carrying a film or playing the relatable hero alongside more eccentric characters. However, he truly excels when playing those quirky supporting roles. Examples include Cruise’s performance as Les in Tropic Thunder and Pitt’s portrayal of Floyd in True Romance.
Tom Cruise shines more in roles like Digger Rockwell than in roles like Maverick. While he’s undeniably charming in movies like Top Gun, those roles don’t really push him as an actor – he’s essentially playing himself. When he takes on characters in films like Digger, Magnolia, or Born on the Fourth of July, he completely transforms, losing himself in the role. If he can achieve that level of immersion with Digger, I believe he’s a strong contender for an Oscar.
