Adam Sandler has a deal with Netflix to create a series of films for the platform. He’s produced several movies including Murder Mystery (2019), Hustle (2022), Happy Gilmore 2 (2025), You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah (2023), and many more. His latest project is Roommates, a comedy centered around female college students.
Though it might seem surprising coming from Adam Sandler, his new movie Roommates is similar to many of his previous films. Like most comedies produced by his company, Happy Madison, it’s a lighthearted movie featuring his friends and family, and it’s expected to be a big hit on streaming platforms.
As a movie fan, I recently watched Roommates, and it’s a really fun film! It’s directed by Chandler Levack and centers around two freshman college roommates, Devon and Celeste, who start as besties but quickly become rivals. It reminded me a bit of those classic teen comedies like Mean Girls – it definitely nails the complicated, sometimes catty, dynamics of female friendships. But honestly, who hasn’t had a terrible roommate? That part of the movie feels super relatable – it’s something almost everyone can connect with!
Sadie Sandler, Adam Sandler’s daughter, stars in the movie Roommates, alongside Chloe East (known for Heretic). The cast is filled with the daughters of other famous faces, including Eddie Murphy, Martin Scorsese, and Chris Rock, according to Decider. Though some have called it a product of Hollywood connections, Roommates is a genuinely funny movie with a talented and well-connected cast delivering hilarious performances.
I’m not surprised Roommates is doing so well! Ever since it came out, it’s been getting huge numbers of viewers – FlixPatrol shows just how popular it is. Honestly, with how funny and unique this show is, it feels like it was always destined to be a hit.
Roommates Has Been Number One On Netflix Since Its Premiere
Since it started streaming on April 17th, Roommates has been the most popular show on Netflix in the US, taking over the top spot from the movie Thrash.
Despite a lack of significant promotion before its release – something The Guardian noted with disappointment – Roommates faced an uphill battle for attention. With so many new shows and movies constantly appearing on streaming platforms, it risked being overlooked and becoming just another hidden gem that few people discover.
Though it didn’t get much attention before launch, the new Happy Madison comedy quickly became a hit. It reached the top spot on Netflix on its release day and has stayed there for almost a week. While the disaster film Thrash generated more buzz beforehand, this smaller comedy still managed to surprise everyone and gain a lot of viewers.
Before its release, the movie Roommates didn’t generate much buzz as just another Adam Sandler film. Therefore, its success isn’t simply because of Sandler’s popularity. Roommates is a good movie in its own right and deserves recognition for that.
Why People Are Watching Roommates
Roommates is a funny and relatable movie with great acting. Critics are generally enjoying it, and it feels like a classic, lighthearted comedy from the late 90s or early 2000s.
I’m already hooked on this new show! It was created by two hilarious writers from SNL, Ceara O’Sullivan and Jimmy Fowlie. What I love is how relatable it is – it’s all about dealing with terrible roommates. Seriously, who hasn’t had that nightmare situation, whether in college or just trying to share an apartment? The main character, Devon, has it rough. Her roommate breaks every unwritten rule – messing with her stuff, even using her bed! It’s so frustrating to watch, but in a funny way because it feels so real.
The script is both funny and relatable, and the cast delivers excellent performances. Nick Kroll, known from Big Mouth, and Natasha Lyonne, of Russian Doll, wonderfully portray Devon’s overly supportive, but sometimes awkward, parents. Adding to the story, Sarah Sherman from SNL provides expert narration as the school counselor.
Beyond the well-known actors, the younger cast really shines, delivering over-the-top performances that are perfect for this silly teen comedy. And the movie ends with a cameo from a famous musician – but you’ll have to watch all the way through to see it!
The comedy Roommates feels like a throwback to teen movies from the late 90s and early 2000s, but with a modern twist – the awkwardness of growing up is now amplified by social media and public scrutiny. Critics are generally enjoying the film, giving it a 68% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 6/10 from Ebaster.
I’ve been keeping an eye on what everyone’s watching on Netflix, and Roommates is still a popular pick – it’s a genuinely funny movie with some scenes that had me cracking up. But its reign at the top might be ending soon. April 24th brings the release of Apex, a survival thriller that’s getting a lot of buzz, and I have a feeling it’s going to give
