Predator Is a Free Streaming Hit on Tubi

Almost four decades after it first came out, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s fans are still enjoying his classic film, Predator. Both Predator and its sequel, Predator 2 (which doesn’t include Schwarzenegger), are currently very popular on the free streaming service Tubi. According to FlixPatrol, Predator is the most-watched movie on Tubi right now, with Predator 2 close behind.

As a huge fan of action movies, I remember when Predator came out in 1987 – it was a massive hit! It actually opened at number one in the US, bringing in $12 million right away. By the time it finished playing in theaters, it had made nearly $98.3 million worldwide, with around $59.7 million of that coming from North America. Considering it only cost about $15 million to make, that’s a seriously impressive return – it made over six times its budget!

What Is Predator About?

In the movie Predator, Arnold Schwarzenegger plays Dutch, the leader of an elite commando team hired by the CIA to rescue pilots who have crashed in Central America. After completing their mission and trying to return home, the team realizes they are being stalked by an almost invisible creature that blends into the jungle. This creature collects trophies from its victims, and the commandos soon discover they’ve become the prey in a deadly hunt by a clever alien.

John McTiernan directed the film Predator, based on a screenplay by Jim and John Thomas. The movie features Arnold Schwarzenegger, alongside Elpidia Carrillo, Carl Weathers, Richard Chaves, Sonny Landham, Bill Duke, Jesse Ventura, and Shane Black.

Why Didn’t Arnold Schwarzenegger Return in Predator 2?

The original Predator was a hit, leading to a sequel, Predator 2, released in 1990. While the Thomas brothers again wrote the script, Stephen Hopkins directed the film, though reports suggest this happened after a disagreement over payment.

Gary Busey stepped into the main role, playing Special Agent Peter Keyes, in Predator 2. He acted alongside Danny Glover, Rubén Blades, María Conchita Alonso, Bill Paxton, and Robert Davi. Kevin Peter Hall once again played the Predator.

Ten years after the first film, Predator 2 brings the alien hunter back to Earth. This time, however, the action moves from the jungles of Central America to the streets of Los Angeles. When a series of drug dealers are murdered, Detective Lieutenant Mike Harrigan (Danny Glover) and his team begin investigating, soon realizing they’re dealing with something far beyond a typical criminal. Despite warnings from a secretive government agent, they continue their pursuit of the creature.

Despite getting negative reviews when it first came out, Predator 2 has become a favorite among a dedicated group of fans over time. While it made $57.1 million in theaters with a production cost of $20–30 million, it didn’t perform as well financially as the original Predator movie.

Trachtenberg recounted meeting Arnold Schwarzenegger, who joked that he expected to be reminded of his famous line, ‘I’ll be back,’ more often. This showed Schwarzenegger understands how iconic the franchise remains. Trachtenberg also said Schwarzenegger was enthusiastic about future possibilities, noting there are plenty of stories left to explore – like how Dutch and Naru were captured, or what happened after they thawed out. He believes there’s a lot of potential for more stories.
