It’s always disappointing when a show you enjoy gets canceled, even if it seems popular – networks and studios sometimes make that decision regardless. Some shows get a final season to finish their stories, but others are cut short after only a season or two.
Many classic TV shows are being brought back, but often as movies rather than traditional series. This can actually be a good thing, letting studios profit from existing fans and attract a new generation. Sometimes these movie revivals are so successful, they lead to even more related content being created.
Star Trek: The Motion Picture Revived a Beloved Franchise
One of the most famous developments in the history of Star Trek is its move from television to the big screen. After the original series ended in 1969, it briefly continued as an animated show from 1973 to 1974. Throughout this time, the show’s creator, Gene Roddenberry, persistently tried to convince Paramount Pictures to make a Star Trek movie, as the show remained popular. Although a film was approved in 1975, the project faced numerous setbacks. Early script drafts didn’t meet Paramount’s expectations, and the studio eventually cancelled the movie in favor of returning to television.
Following the success of Star Wars and growing public interest, Paramount revived plans for a Star Trek movie. They announced a $15 million adaptation of the original TV series, produced by Roddenberry and directed by Academy Award winner Robert Wise. While the first Star Trek film earned $139 million, its final cost neared $45 million due to pricey special effects, unused sets, and filming problems. This resulted in a quickly finished cut that barely met its release date in Washington, D.C. Though many considered the film a letdown, its popularity with fans convinced Paramount to fund a lower-budget sequel, The Wrath of Khan, which became a beloved favorite. Despite The Motion Picture still sparking debate among fans and critics, its role in breathing new life into the franchise is clear, paving the way for numerous successful films and TV series revivals.
Seven Kings Must Die is the Conclusion to The Last Kingdom
Released in 2024, Seven Kings Must Die is a Netflix film that continues and concludes the popular historical series, The Last Kingdom. Based on Bernard Cornwell’s The Saxon Stories novels, the film stars Alexander Dreymon as Uhtred of Bebbanburg and adapts the final book in the series. Set in 937 AD, the story revolves around the power struggles following the death of King Edward, who left no clear heir. A contested son attempts to claim the throne, sparking a war that will determine England’s fate.
Those who have followed the original series will likely appreciate the film’s depth, as it builds on years of character growth, emotional moments, and the background of historical events and political changes, all revolving around a central prophecy. However, viewers new to The Last Kingdom might find the movie confusing due to its quick pace and summarized plot. The story’s popularity is clear – it started on BBC Two, became a Netflix hit, and has now culminated in Seven Kings Must Die, a well-made conclusion.
The Leader of the Peaky Blinders Passes on the Torch
Following the First World War, Peaky Blinders is a British crime drama about the Shelby family and their gang, the Peaky Blinders, in Birmingham. The story centers around Tommy Shelby, played by Cillian Murphy, and continues in the Netflix film The Immortal Man. This film sees the notorious gangster return to Birmingham to protect his son and confront his destiny. As dark and intense as the original series, the film provides a satisfying conclusion and solidifies Tommy Shelby’s place among the most memorable fictional gangsters, like Michael Corleone.
I was so bummed when I heard there wouldn’t be a seventh season of Peaky Blinders, but honestly, the movie The Immortal Man was the perfect way to end things! It came out in theaters on March 6th, 2026, and then hit Netflix a couple weeks later. Everyone loved it – it got amazing reviews and a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes! The story picks up six years after the end of season six, putting Tommy Shelby and the gang right in the middle of the Birmingham Blitz in 1940. It really felt like a fitting end to Tommy’s story, tying everything up nicely, though with plenty of the show’s signature violence. Plus, I’m already excited because they’re planning another series set in the mid-1950s, following a new group of criminals as they try to make their way in the tough world after the war.
Serenity Continued Joss Whedon’s Short-Lived Firefly Series
Before directing Marvel’s The Avengers, Joss Whedon made his feature film debut with Serenity in 2005. This space Western continued the story of his 2002 TV series, Firefly, bringing back all the original actors. Firefly was canceled after just 11 of its 14 episodes aired, but it quickly gained a dedicated following. Thanks to strong DVD sales and its status as a beloved cult classic, fans convinced Universal Studios to fund a $39 million movie continuation. Despite high expectations and a good opening weekend, Serenity wasn’t a commercial success, earning just over $40 million and ending hopes for the planned movie trilogy.
The movie received positive scores from critics (82% on the Tomatometer) and audiences (91% on the Popcornmeter), but many fans were still disappointed by how the franchise ended, especially with the loss of two popular characters. Despite this, Firefly continued to live on through novels, comics, and games. Now, those hoping for a continuation of the story have something to look forward to: Nathan Fillion, a cast member from the original series, announced on March 15, 2026, that a reboot animated series is in development with ShadowMachine, and several original actors will return.
A Goofy Movie is a Sleeper Hit About Single Fatherhood
Disney’s A Goofy Movie is considered a classic and centers on the bond between a father, Goofy, and his son, Max. The film originated from the popular Saturday morning cartoon Goof Troop, which enjoyed moderate success and good reviews. Jeffrey Katzenberg, then a leader at Disney, proposed a road trip concept to a story supervisor for Goof Troop, who then developed it into a full-length movie.
Though made during Disney’s creative peak in the early 1990s, A Goofy Movie wasn’t created by the main Walt Disney Animation Studios team. Initial reactions from audiences were mixed – some struggled with the blend of Goofy’s silly humor and surprisingly heartfelt moments. However, after it became available for home viewing, the film developed a dedicated and enthusiastic fanbase.
Initially met with mixed reactions, A Goofy Movie has gained a devoted following and is now celebrated as a cult classic. A recent documentary, released on its 30th anniversary, explores the film’s surprising journey from initial disappointment to its current status as a beloved Disney favorite, particularly among millennials. The movie’s popularity even led to a direct-to-video sequel that concluded the Goof Troop TV series as Max prepared for college.
El Camino is Jesse’s Epilogue to Breaking Bad
Breaking Bad began as a thrilling crime drama centered around Walter White, a high school chemistry teacher. After being diagnosed with lung cancer, he starts manufacturing methamphetamine to provide for his family. Bryan Cranston’s character teams up with Jesse Pinkman, a former student and drug dealer, to navigate the dangerous world of crime.
Six years after the end of Breaking Bad in 2013, Aaron Paul returned as Jesse Pinkman in the 2019 film El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie. The film had a limited release in theaters and was also available on Netflix. El Camino picks up right after the Breaking Bad finale and shows what happens after Jesse escapes from the Brotherhood. The movie focuses on Jesse trying to get money and start a new life, effectively concluding the story begun in Breaking Bad and its spin-off, Better Call Saul, and offering fans a satisfying resolution.
Wynonna Earp: Vengeance Brings Fans Back to the Homestead
The TV show Wynonna Earp, based on a comic book series by Beau Smith, centers around Wynonna, the great-great-granddaughter of famous lawman Wyatt Earp. She returns to her hometown of Purgatory, near the Canadian Rockies, and discovers a family curse. She also gains the ability to use her ancestor’s gun, Peacemaker, to banish supernatural creatures back to hell. Wynonna Earp gained a dedicated fanbase for its positive portrayal of women and LGBTQ+ characters, but its fourth season faced challenges with funding and was temporarily halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite being cancelled, the show continues to have a devoted following.
Because of passionate fans, the show Wynonna Earp returned after three years as a special feature on Tubi. The original cast reprised their roles in Wynonna Earp: Vengeance, where the last of the Earp family faces her most dangerous enemy yet – someone determined to get revenge on her and everyone she cares about. Showrunner Emily Andras has spoken highly of Tubi and the creative freedom they offered, leading to optimism for the future of the series. Andras wants to take the show even further, and the cast is eager to return, so another revival of Wynonna Earp is definitely a possibility.
Downton Abbey Returns for a Royal Visit and a Cinematic Trilogy
Before Bridgerton became popular, Downton Abbey was the go-to historical drama for many years. The show is set on a large estate in Yorkshire and follows the lives of the wealthy Crawley family and the staff who work for them, showing how they deal with the social classes of Britain. After the success of the TV series, Julian Fellowes continued the story with three movies, the most recent of which is scheduled for release in September 2025.
With so many characters in Downton Abbey, you might expect some to be underdeveloped, but the recent films actually allowed each one to grow and even have moments to truly stand out, more so than in the original series. Fans were especially pleased to see satisfying conclusions for characters like the Dowager Countess and Thomas Barrow – a genuinely happy ending for him, considering the challenges faced by gay men in the early 1900s – and to watch Tom Branson find love again with Lucy Smith. While The Grand Finale says goodbye to some favorites, Julian Fellowes hasn’t ruled out future stories set in the Downton universe, like a prequel, a spinoff, or even a connection to his current show, The Gilded Age.
The Long-Awaited Deadwood Movie Gave Fans Closure
The highly praised series Deadwood first aired on HBO in 2004. It’s set in the rough-and-tumble town of Deadwood, South Dakota, and tells the stories of the people who lived there, including real historical figures like Seth Bullock (played by Timothy Olyphant) and Al Swearengen (played by Ian McShane). The show features a large cast and explores how people flocked to Deadwood hoping to strike it rich, taking advantage of the lack of law and order in a town built on land taken from the Sioux.
Despite its critical acclaim, Deadwood only ran for three seasons because it was expensive to make, faced budget concerns from the network, and creator David Milch clashed with HBO. Milch turned down HBO’s offer of a shorter final season, wanting either a full season or no season at all. Fortunately, after thirteen years, fans finally got the ending they craved with the film Deadwood: The Movie. The film brought back most of the original cast and stayed true to the show’s gritty style, giving each character a satisfying conclusion.
Mr Monk’s Last Case Showed a Post-COVID World
Monk is a detective series that ran for eight seasons, successfully combining mystery with comedic moments. The show centers on Adrian Monk, a former San Francisco police detective who now works as a private investigator. He’s brought in to help with the most challenging cases while also trying to uncover the truth behind his wife’s unsolved murder. Known for its relatable portrayal of a protagonist with obsessive-compulsive disorder and over 300 fears, Monk continues to be popular with viewers. The show’s two-part finale, which aired in 2009, was the most-watched scripted drama on cable television for three years, attracting over nine million viewers.
It wasn’t surprising to see Adrian Monk back on screen, and a story centered around the COVID pandemic felt like the perfect fit. Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie takes place twelve years after the original series ended, bringing back the beloved cast. The film follows the retired detective as he investigates the death of his stepdaughter’s fiancé. Creator and writer Andy Breckman wanted to revisit Adrian Monk’s life, both during and after the pandemic, and this movie delivers, bringing the character back in classic form.
