I’ve been consistently impressed with the quality of shows on Apple TV+, and this one definitely lives up to the hype. It actually snuck up on me – after waiting two years for its return, I’m thrilled to say it’s even better than before!
The British crime drama Criminal Record premiered on January 10, 2024, and recently launched its second season on April 22. Starring Peter Capaldi (known from Doctor Who) and Cush Jumbo (The Good Wife), the show was initially very well-received, but Season 2 has surpassed expectations. Critics have given Criminal Record Season 2 a perfect rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a rare achievement.
Okay, so it’s early days – only five reviews are in – but the initial buzz is seriously good! Season 1 is currently sitting at a ‘Certified Fresh’ 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 49 reviews. We don’t have an audience score yet, but it’s worth noting that Season 1 itself was a bit more of a mixed bag, with a 64% approval rating.
What Are Critics Saying About Criminal Record Season 2?
Viewers have particularly enjoyed the natural chemistry between Peter Capaldi and Naomie Harris, and how their characters played off each other, even more than the plot. The second season shifts focus to a story with stronger political themes, but…
Sarah Dempster of The Guardian describes Criminal Record as a show that isn’t overly complicated. It focuses on clear, well-paced storytelling with surprises unfolding naturally. The show’s depth comes from its well-developed characters, rather than a convoluted plot.
Ricky Valero from FandomWire is really excited about the new season, calling it a significant improvement over the first season of Criminal Record. He praises the show’s strong performances, writing, and overall quality.
What Happens in Criminal Record?
This British crime thriller centers on detectives Daniel Hegarty, an experienced investigator, and June Lenker, a rookie. They find themselves at odds while reopening a cold case after receiving a mysterious phone call.
In Season 2 of Criminal Record, police officers June Lenker and Daniel Hegarty, who are rivals, must work together when a young man is stabbed at a political rally. Their investigation begins as a murder hunt, but quickly grows into a dangerous undercover operation to stop a far-right group from detonating a bomb in London.
I’m really excited for Season 2! It brings back Peter Capaldi as DCI Daniel Hegarty and Kelly Macdonald as DS June Lenker, which is fantastic. Plus, they’ve added some great new faces like Dustin Demri-Burns, Luca Pasqualino, Luther Ford, Lyndsey Marshal, and Peter Sullivan. Thankfully, we’ll still see returning favorites like Shaun Dooley, Stephen Campbell Moore, and Charlie Creed-Miles too – it’s a strong cast all around!
The crime drama quickly became popular after a two-year delay, reaching number five in the U.S.
The show is up against several others, including the dramedy Margo’s Got Money Troubles, the psychological thriller Imperfect Women, and Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
Criminal Record releases new episodes every Wednesday on Apple TV.
