I have to say, even with the spoilers for the season 2 finale of Matlock, I’m really impressed with where they’re taking this revival! When the show first came back in 2024 with Kathy Bates, a lot of people were unsure. But the twist? It was genius! It wasn’t just a simple reboot of the classic Andy Griffith series. Instead, Bates’ character cleverly built on the original premise, using it as a cover to investigate a law firm she believed held the key to understanding what happened to her daughter. It felt like a smart way to honor the original while also appealing to a new audience, and I think the direction they’ve chosen for Matlock’s fate is absolutely the right one.
The two-year storyline involving the Wellbrexa case comes to a close with the final two episodes of Matlock season 2. In “Who Are You” and “Matty Matlock,” Madeline and Olympia finally reveal Jacobson Moore’s misdeeds, leading to several arrests. This leaves fans curious about the future of the characters. Fortunately, CBS has renewed Matlock for a third season, and the direction of the story has already been decided.
Matlock Season 3 Will Be A Reboot Of The Series
Now that the Wellbrexa case is closed, season 3 of Matlock will be a completely new direction for the show. This is a natural shift, especially after what happened in the season 2 finale. While the consequences of Senior, Julian, and their accomplices’ actions will still be explored, with Madeline having gotten her revenge, the series can move forward and focus on a fresh, overarching storyline.
As a big fan, I was really intrigued to hear from showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman in an interview with TVLine. She revealed that when Matlock comes back this winter for its third season, it’s going to feel quite different. Apparently, there’s going to be a time jump, and Madeline and Olympia will be diving into a brand new mystery. We’re still not sure if they’ll actually go through with opening their own law firm, but they will be working out of a new office, which pretty much confirms they’re leaving Jacobson Moore. It’s an exciting shift, and I can’t wait to see where they take the story!
I see this as the evolution of how we tell stories. I don’t want to fall into predictable patterns; I’m always looking for ways to innovate. While each episode will still feature a central case, everything else will be fresh, though with echoes of what came before. We’re building a new overarching mystery that unfolds naturally and makes sense within the story, with its own compelling stakes and momentum. As for the characters, everyone is growing and changing. A few people know Matty’s secret identity, and she’s embracing it, but she’s navigating that in a new way. Her relationship with Edwin will continue to evolve, and the events of last season will create a lot of new and interesting dynamics between everyone.
Why It’s The Perfect Time To End Matlock’s Wellbrexa Case
Season two of Matlock was noticeably more challenging than its first. Beyond the departure of David del Rio and his character, Billy, the show also saw a decline in viewership. Despite these difficulties, some episodes were still among the best on television in the 2025-2026 season. The show’s creators likely realized the Wellbrexa storyline was losing its momentum and decided to bring it to a close. Fortunately, the season had already established all the necessary clues, culminating in a satisfying finale.
It’s true that season 3 of Matlock has a tough act to follow, considering how captivating Madeline’s revenge plot was. However, the team that created that storyline is capable of delivering another compelling arc. Now that the show has established its core legal format, it can explore different avenues, and a strong focus on the dynamic between Madeline and Olympia – arguably the best aspect of the series – would be a great direction.
