Ridley Scott’s Exodus: Gods and Kings Is Losing Its Free Streaming Home

Even the most successful filmmakers have made movies that didn’t quite hit the mark. For Ridley Scott, that film is Exodus: Gods and Kings.

The movie is currently available to watch for free on Tubi and was recently popular there. However, it won’t stay available for long – it’s expected to be removed around April 30th. Tubi hasn’t announced the exact date, but it’s likely to disappear soon.

Exodus: Gods and Kings Found Its Audience on Streaming

April was a significant month for religious observances, with Easter celebrations across many faiths. This led to renewed interest in several biblical films, including Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ and Ridley Scott’s Exodus: Gods and Kings.

The movie is based on the biblical story of the Exodus, where Moses leads the Hebrews out of Egypt, as told in the Book of Exodus. It centers on two princes, Moses and Ramses, who grow up as brothers. However, when Ramses learns that Moses is actually of Hebrew origin, he exiles him to the desert. This leads Moses to a greater purpose: freeing the Israelites from slavery.

Christian Bale starred as Moses, and Joel Edgerton played Ramses II. The film also featured Aaron Paul, Sigourney Weaver, and Ben Kingsley. The screenplay was a collaborative effort by Adam Cooper, Bill Collage, Jeffrey Caine, and Steven Zaillian.

This isn’t the first time the well-known biblical story has been made into a movie. The acclaimed animated film The Prince of Egypt, featuring a famous cast, told the same story back in 1998.

Exodus: Gods and Kings Had a Disastrous Reception

Critics didn’t respond well to the biblical epic, and it currently has a low 29% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers felt the movie didn’t do justice to the original story it’s based on. General audiences weren’t much more impressed, giving it a 35% rating.

In addition to receiving negative reviews, the film Exodus: Gods and Kings was banned in several countries like Egypt, Morocco, and the United Arab Emirates, where it was labeled as having a pro-Zionist bias.

Despite receiving generally negative reviews, Exodus: Gods and Kings isn’t Ridley Scott’s lowest-rated movie. That distinction belongs to his 2006 film A Good Year, which featured Russell Crowe and Marion Cotillard. While not a critical success, A Good Year was better received by audiences, earning a 66% approval rating.

Despite its generally negative reviews, Exodus: Gods and Kings wasn’t Scott’s worst-performing film with audiences. It actually received a higher rating (35%) than his 2013 thriller, The Counselor. However, the film was still considered a box office disappointment. With a production budget between $140 and $200 million, it only earned $268.1 million worldwide, barely breaking even.

You can currently watch Exodus: Gods and Kings on Tubi. It’s not available for streaming on any other platforms, but you can rent or buy it digitally.
