Action fans are in luck! Jason Statham is consistently releasing new films, and he’s already gearing up for another one so soon after his recent movie, Shelter. The trailer for his upcoming film, Mutiny, has just been released, and it’s scheduled to hit theaters on August 21, 2026, courtesy of Lionsgate.
Jean-François Richet, the director of Plane (with Gerard Butler), brings us Mutiny, an action film largely taking place at sea. It shares some similarities with Jason Statham’s The Meg, which also involved ocean-based action and a giant shark. While The Meg was fun, it wasn’t considered one of Statham’s strongest movies, and the trailer for Mutiny suggests a more exciting experience.
What Happens in ‘Mutiny’s Trailer?
Unfortunately, Mutiny falls into a familiar pattern with Jason Statham playing, yet again, someone with a past life. The movie introduces us to Cole Reed, a former Special Forces soldier and NYPD officer who now works in private security. We quickly see him with his boss, a wealthy businessman named Tibu, but their day is cut short when Tibu is murdered before Reed’s eyes. Wrongfully accused of the killing, Reed is forced to flee.
It’s a relief to see the story move past the familiar trope of Jason Statham endlessly protecting someone. With his wealthy boss now dead, he’s facing the conflict alone. But things quickly become more complex when Reed finds himself on a cargo ship, and it’s not immediately clear why. He might be tracking those responsible for the conspiracy, or perhaps he’s simply trying to get away. On board, he discovers a container holding numerous people, suggesting a possible human trafficking operation.
Things quickly escalate after that. A criminal discovers Reed, but before he can learn anything, he’s brutally attacked, and chaos erupts. The fast-paced editing and constant, intense violence effectively create a feeling of danger and show just how evil and unstable this world is. The trailer ends with a fantastic visual – more action unfolds within the letters of the word “MUTINY” as they appear on screen. It’s easily one of the best trailers we’ve seen in a while, and if the movie lives up to it, we’re in for something special.
‘Mutiny’ Should Easily Beat ‘The Meg’… Since the Bar Is Low

Jason Statham’s last movie about the ocean wasn’t a hit with critics. The Meg received a 47% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and its sequel, Meg 2: The Trench, did even worse at 27%. It’s a low standard for his new film, Mutiny, to surpass. While critics weren’t impressed with the shark movies, they were financially successful. Considering how much fans enjoy Jason Statham, Mutiny is likely to perform well at the box office.
If you’re a dedicated Jason Statham fan, you’ll probably enjoy Mutiny more. Seeing him in classic action scenes with human opponents is more satisfying than watching him battle sharks, as fun as The Meg movies were. While those films were exciting when they came out, they didn’t quite fit Statham’s usual style, and looking back, the action feels surprisingly tame now.
Lots of actors can convincingly pretend to fight sharks, but Jason Statham brings a unique combination of cool confidence, charisma, and toughness to his roles. This new movie appears to have a tighter, more straightforward story, taking place mostly on a cargo ship – a welcome change from the often-chaotic plots of other Statham films that prioritize action over clarity. With director Jean-François Richet at the helm, known for the slick action in Plane, we can anticipate similarly well-executed fight choreography. It’s a fitting title, Ship, and hopefully, it will reach the same high standard as action classics like Under Siege.
