Welcome to [Column Name], a feature that appears every two weeks. I’ll be showcasing a comic, series, event, or storyline that both longtime readers will appreciate and newcomers can discover.
The initial trailer for the upcoming film thrilled viewers with a fast-paced fight against classic Spider-Man villains. It also introduced The Hand, a dangerous ninja group, to the big screen, and included a cameo by Jon Bernthal reprising his role as the Punisher, Frank Castle.
The Punisher and Spider-Man have crossed paths many times, starting with Frank Castle’s first appearance in Amazing Spider-Man #129, where he was a mercenary who followed a personal code. They often clash due to differing views on right and wrong during their adventures. However, when facing a clear and common enemy – a dangerous Neo-Nazi and his followers, as seen in The Punisher War Journal #14-15 (created by Carl Potts, David Ross, Russ Heath, Gregory Wright, Jim Novak, and with covers by Jim Lee) – they’ve always been able to work together effectively.
Spider-Man Also Has a Long History with Punisher’s Battlevan
Frank Castle, a.k.a. The Punisher, has driven a lot of different vehicles throughout his crime-fighting career. However, he often relies on his armored and weaponized Battlevan, which serves as his mobile headquarters. While Jon Bernthal’s version of the character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe also likes vans, the one shown in the trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day is more heavily equipped than any we’ve seen before.
Although Castle’s tendency to kill criminals caused some friction in previous encounters, things went more easily when he and the Punisher teamed up in The Punisher War Journal #14 back in the 1990s. As often happens with these heroes, they first crossed paths while independently investigating the same dangerous criminal – a Neo-Nazi named Eric Hartmann.
Hartmann was taken from his parents as a baby by Nazi scientists who aimed to raise him as part of a supposed “master race.” He survived World War II and later continued to promote hateful ideologies as an adult in New York City. His actions drew the attention of Peter Parker, who began documenting Hartmann’s harmful behavior.
After a group of Neo-Nazis began targeting protesters, Hartmann’s extremist group saw them as new targets. When Punisher learned about this list, he quickly moved to protect those threatened. He teamed up with Spider-Man at the home of one of the intended victims, and the two heroes immediately began working together to stop the criminals. Spider-Man even rode along with Punisher in his armored van, the Battlevan.
Spider-Man and Punisher Go Full Die Hard at the Daily Bugle
When Hartmann tries to expose the harmful nature of someone’s hateful words, Spider-Man and the Punisher find even more reason to team up.
Look, Spider-Man and the Punisher definitely don’t see eye-to-eye on how to do things, but right now, we’re both focused on the same goal: protecting innocent people from bad guys. And honestly, it’s super personal for me because Mary Jane is one of the hostages Hartmann’s got at the Daily Bugle! That’s why I’m even willing to team up with the Punisher, even though he usually takes things way too far.
Despite his violent tendencies, he readily adjusts his approach to be less extreme when possible, prioritizing a swift confrontation with the Neo-Nazis. This leads to an entertaining undercover operation at the Daily Bugle, featuring both The Punisher and Spider-Man.
Despite the serious dangers and heartbreaking losses, this story is ultimately uplifting. It’s inspiring to see the people of New York unite against Hartmann’s hateful words and work to reveal the truth about his dangerous nature, adding a hopeful element to what could have been a very grim tale.
Everyone Chips In to Fight the Threat of Neo-Nazis
What I always loved about the original War Journal series is that our heroes weren’t fighting this battle by themselves. Seeing everyday people – like the protesters standing up to Hartmann’s awful rhetoric – and even characters like J. Jonah Jameson, who was furious at Hartmann and his followers, really made it clear who the villains were. It wasn’t just a superhero fight, it was about good people opposing hate, and that made it so powerful.
I’ve always been fascinated by the dynamic between Spider-Man and the Punisher. They’re such different characters – Spidey’s all about being a traditional hero, while the Punisher operates in a much grayer area. It’s cool how, despite their clashing methods and frequent disagreements – especially about how far the Punisher is willing to go – they’ve developed a solid respect for each other. They just get that the other will always be who they are, and that’s what makes their uneasy alliance so interesting to watch.
Despite their differences, the hero and anti-hero quickly put aside their disagreements when confronted by the threat of Hartmann’s Neo-Nazis. They found common ground and teamed up to fight against those who oppress others. The Punisher mostly respected Spider-Man’s preference for non-lethal methods, and accepted when lethal force was necessary.
They didn’t fight this war by themselves. People from all walks of life in New York – including the police and even those targeted by the Neo-Nazis at the Daily Bugle – came together to oppose the evil they witnessed. It’s a heartwarming story with a straightforward message that, unfortunately, still feels relevant today: we’re stronger when we unite against hatred.
