Lovecraftian horror is notoriously difficult to pull off well, but Netflix’s new 8-episode series does it remarkably. Although the show isn’t flawless, it sets a high bar and offers valuable lessons for future horror series exploring similar themes.
It’s surprisingly difficult to make good movies or TV shows based on H.P. Lovecraft’s work. His writing style is very abstract and open to interpretation. He often hints at huge, terrifying things without ever showing them directly, letting the reader fill in the details and experience the horror themselves.
Because the author doesn’t clearly describe what his gods and monsters look like, it’s very difficult to adapt his stories for television. However, a standout, short-lived series on Netflix is one of the few that truly captures the unsettling, terrifying feeling and sense of mystery that defines his work.
Archive 81 Is One Of The Best Modern Lovecraftian Shows
While Archive 81 isn’t based on specific stories by H.P. Lovecraft, it’s inspired by a podcast of the same name. As the series unfolds, it increasingly draws on themes and ideas from Lovecraftian horror. At first, it feels similar to movies like The Ring, with a supernatural force spreading its influence through old recordings and technology.
Similar to many stories inspired by Lovecraft, the show suggests the presence of a powerful, god-like being from another dimension who watches over humanity. Like the creatures in Lovecraft’s tales, this being operates outside of human understanding and ethics, existing on a scale beyond our minds. The show also draws on Lovecraftian themes by exploring how music can connect different worlds and even cause madness.
As a huge fan, I’ve noticed some really cool parallels to H.P. Lovecraft’s work in this show. The way music is used to create a creepy atmosphere instantly made me think of “The Music of Erich Zann.” And the devoted followers of the show’s main supernatural entity? It’s totally reminiscent of the cult in “The Call of Cthulhu.” There’s even this storyline about a strange, otherworldly mold that infects people and drives them mad, which feels a lot like “Color Out of Space.” It’s clear the creators were inspired by Lovecraft, and it adds a whole other layer to the show for me!
Netflix’s Archive 81 expertly explores classic Lovecraftian themes, from the delicate nature of mental health to the dangers of uncovering secrets best left hidden. While the show’s story loses some momentum towards the finale, it remains one of the most compelling Lovecraftian adaptations available on television.
Archive 81 Reveals The True Potential Of A Returning Lovecraftian Movie Franchise
Despite quickly gaining a dedicated following and ending on a dramatic cliffhanger, the streaming series Archive 81 was unfortunately canceled after just one season. However, the directors of two episodes, Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, are continuing to expand their own Lovecraftian film series with new projects.
I’m really excited about what this directing duo is doing! They’re working on huge Marvel shows like Daredevil: Born Again right now, but it’s cool to remember they started with smaller, really atmospheric horror films – a lot of them had that creepy, Lovecraftian vibe. They’ve hinted for years that they want to build out the world from those early movies, and I’m hoping we’ll finally see that happen soon! It would be amazing to see those stories connect to everything else they’re doing.
The creators of the critically praised horror film, The Endless, have suggested they’re planning a TV series based on its universe (as mentioned on the Script Apart podcast). While the show is still some time away, their skillful use of Lovecraftian horror in their films makes fans eager to see what they’ll do next.
The impressive directing seen in some of the strongest episodes of Netflix’s Archive 81 hints that horror fans should be excited about what this team will do with their upcoming continuation of Lovecraftian-inspired films.
