Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord episodes 3-4
Darth Maul instantly became a memorable Star Wars villain when he first appeared wielding a double-bladed lightsaber. He’s become even more compelling over time, and the new Maul – Shadow Lord series really showcases his depth and complexity.
Darth Maul’s introduction in 1999’s The Phantom Menace revolutionized lightsaber battles for audiences. Since then, the world of Star Wars has significantly expanded its lightsaber history, going far beyond the initial impact of his double-bladed weapon. This expansion even includes previously unseen abilities and features of double-bladed lightsabers themselves, which are rarely explored in films and TV shows.
Recent episodes of Shadow Lord reveal that Darth Maul’s current double-bladed lightsaber has a new feature not present in the one he used in The Phantom Menace. This also suggests that Maul is an even more skilled lightsaber duelist than previously believed.
The History of Maul’s Lightsabers Briefly Explained
Let’s talk about Darth Maul’s iconic lightsaber. It burst onto the scene in The Phantom Menace and immediately became a fan favorite, but sadly, it didn’t last long. In that unforgettable duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi, the weapon was literally cut in half right before Maul met his own unfortunate end. A cool design, but a very short lifespan on screen!
Following his return in The Clone Wars, Darth Maul kept using the remaining half of his lightsaber. He also gained possession of the famed Darksaber after winning a duel against Pre Vizsla, the leader of the Death Watch, and defeating him.
During the Siege of Mandalore, near the end of The Clone Wars, Maul fixed his signature double-bladed lightsaber by creating a new half. This same repaired lightsaber appears in Shadow Lord, which takes place just one year after the Clone Wars ended and the rise of the Empire.
When Maul reappeared in Rebels, he used a new double-bladed lightsaber. This saber was cleverly hidden as a cane and appeared to be built from parts taken from an Imperial Inquisitor’s weapon. It was the same lightsaber he used in his final battle and ultimate defeat by Obi-Wan Kenobi on Tatooine.
Shadow Lord recently announced a cool addition to Darth Maul’s second double-bladed lightsaber.
Shadow Lord Confirms Maul’s Current Lightsaber Is A Split-Saber
Episodes 3 and 4 of Maul – Shadow Lord reveal that Maul’s second double-bladed lightsaber can be separated into two separate lightsabers.
Darth Maul first demonstrates this skill during his fight with Devon in Shadow Lord, episode 3, where they each use one half of a Sith Lord’s lightsaber. Then, in episode 4, he smoothly joins his two lightsabers back into a single, double-bladed staff while fighting the Pyke Syndicate.
I’ve noticed this split-saber thing isn’t brand new to Star Wars. We saw Asajj Ventress use something similar, but she didn’t really explore all it could do, preferring to just use two separate lightsabers. But Cal Kestis in the Jedi games? He really uses it! Switching between different saber styles is a huge part of how you play the game, and it’s awesome.
We’ve known Darth Maul could split his lightsaber like this during the battle for Mandalore, but Shadow Lord is the first time we’ve actually seen it happen on screen. This opens up the possibility of seeing him fight with two blades in future episodes – something he’s only done once before, during his fight with Darth Sidious on Mandalore.
Darth Maul is clearly most proficient fighting with his double-bladed lightsaber. But the ability to split it into two separate blades gives him a tactical advantage, letting him change his fighting style and throw opponents off balance – something he’s demonstrated effectively in battles, like his attack on the Pyke Syndicate’s Marg Krim.
It’s great to finally see the new lightsaber ability confirmed in the recent episodes, and it opens up a lot of exciting possibilities for future lightsaber battles with Maul.
New episodes of Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord release Mondays on Disney+ from Lucasfilm Animation.
