The Pitt Spinoff’s Fate Officially Sealed by Lead Star & Creator

With the continued popularity of HBO Max’s popular show, many viewers have expressed interest in a spin-off series centered around the night shift team at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center’s emergency room. While the idea has potential, it’s unlikely to become a reality anytime soon.

While a spinoff isn’t out of the question, it’s unlikely, according to Noah Wyle, the actor who played Dr. Robby.

Don’t Expect a Night Shift Spinoff Anytime Soon

Viewers have only seen the night shift workers briefly in The Pitt, usually when they’re switching shifts with the day staff. According to series creator R. Scott Gemmill, the night staff’s different atmosphere is interesting, so it’s good to include them occasionally, even though a separate show focusing on them isn’t planned right now.

Gemmill explained that she enjoys connecting with the night shift team whenever possible, as they bring a unique perspective and work style.

A member of the show’s night staff is getting a bigger role in the upcoming third season. Ayesha Harris, who plays Dr. Parker Ellis, has been promoted to a series regular. She previously had smaller appearances as a member of the night shift, but will now be working the day shift, meaning viewers will see much more of her character in the new episodes.

“Dr. Ellis is going to be working days,” Gemmill verified.

There Will Still Be Appearances of Night Shift Staff

The show’s night shift team features Shawn Hatosy as Dr. Jack Abbot, Jalen Thomas Brooks as Mateo Diaz, Ken Kirby as Dr. John Shen, Luke Tennie as Dr. Cyrus Henderson, and Sofia Hasmik as Dr. Nazely Toomarian. Creator and executive producer, Gemmill, specifically highlighted Hatosy’s performance as Dr. Abbot, noting the character’s impactful scenes in the Season 2 finale.

Gemmill praised working with Shawn, describing him as ‘fantastic.’ Shawn directed an episode this season and is expected to direct another this year. Gemmill also enjoys writing for his character, noting he brings a serious and impactful presence to every scene. Gemmill believes the show benefits from including him as much as possible.

The first season of The Pitt took place in early fall, and Season 2 moved the action to the Fourth of July weekend. The upcoming third season will be set in winter, allowing the show to explore how harsher weather impacts the staff and patients during a shift.

The Pitt is streaming on HBO Max.
