The gaming world has seen a lot of exciting new consoles and devices released in the last ten years, as gaming has become increasingly popular. This includes innovative systems like the Nintendo Switch and its upcoming successor, the Switch 2, the PlayStation 5, and portable PCs like the Steam Deck.
In the last ten years, many of the most beloved video games ever created have been released. Even though we’re not yet halfway through the 2020s, it’s a good time to remember some truly exceptional titles, like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Elden Ring.
Super Mario Odyssey is the Open World Mario Game Fans Were Waiting For
Super Mario Odyssey is a 3D platforming adventure where Mario sets out to save Princess Peach from the villainous King Bowser. This time, Bowser’s plan is to marry Peach, something she and Mario both strongly oppose.
Compared to other main Mario games, Super Mario Odyssey has a surprisingly serious tone. The game’s world is beautifully designed, and it’s even better thanks to Cappy, Mario’s new hat companion. Cappy gives Mario the ability to transform into many different things, like Goombas and dinosaurs.
Super Mario Odyssey launched alongside the Nintendo Switch and quickly became a beloved game. Its expansive worlds and simple, enjoyable gameplay made it a truly comfortable experience. The next 3D Mario game will face a significant challenge trying to top this landmark title.
Elden Ring Will Ring a Bell With Players
Elden Ring is an action role-playing game taking place in the Lands Between, a realm ruled by powerful, immortal demigods. As the player, you take on the role of a Tarnished, tasked with collecting the shattered pieces of the Elden Ring while battling various supernatural enemies.
Okay, so as someone who’s sunk a lot of hours into action RPGs, I can tell you Elden Ring’s combat is seriously deep. It really feels like you’re rewarded for getting good at fighting enemies and bosses. The better your stats and build, the easier it becomes to dodge attacks or just take them down from a safe distance. It’s all about leveling up and mastering the mechanics!
Seriously, you have to play Elden Ring. It’s one of those games everyone should experience at least once. Even if the tough combat isn’t your thing, the world itself is absolutely stunning and worth the price of admission. Plus, FromSoftware has kept it fresh with a ton of DLC over the years, giving you way more content than almost any other action RPG out there.
Disco Elysium Has a Strange World With Mystical Politics
Disco Elysium is a role-playing game set in the world of Elysium, a place that feels like a realistic version of Earth. The story follows Harry Du Bois, a detective with amnesia, as he tries to solve a series of mysterious murders in the small town of Martinaise.
One of the most compelling aspects of Disco Elysium is the colorful cast of characters and groups you’ll meet. These range from everyday gangs like the Bangers to larger political forces such as the Insulindian Citizens Militia. You can learn about their histories and even uncover clues to the central mystery by finding and reading numerous documents throughout the game.
I’m really hooked on this game, and a lot of it comes down to how well it plays. But honestly, what really keeps me coming back are the characters. They’re so well-developed and feel incredibly real, which just makes the whole story so much better.
Hollow Knight Is the Highest-Octane Modern Metroidvania
Hollow Knight is an adventure game in the style of Metroid and Castlevania, taking place in the decaying kingdom of Hallownest. Players control a brave insect warrior on a quest to become stronger by battling challenging foes. They’re particularly focused on defeating Hornet, a skilled insect who might be the most formidable opponent of all.
In Hollow Knight, simply having a lot of health isn’t enough to win. Players need to skillfully use their weapons and collect ‘Souls’ to make battles, especially against tough enemies and bosses, a bit easier.
As a huge fan, I think Hollow Knight really nails what a modern Metroidvania should be – the world and characters are just fantastic. It’s easy to grab on Steam, and it’s a genuinely fun, challenging game with a story that’s absolutely beautiful as you discover it. I’m especially excited about Hollow Knight: Silksong because I have a feeling it’s going to be just as good, if not better!
Celeste Is One of the Most Inspirational and Emotional Games Ever
Celeste is a 2D platforming game inspired by Mount Celeste in British Columbia, Canada. The game follows Madeline, a young woman battling anxiety, as she attempts to climb the challenging mountain. Driven to confront her inner struggles, she pushes forward despite the inherent dangers.
Celeste is a beautifully simple platformer where you jump and climb to reach higher and higher platforms. While there are obstacles like tricky weather and traps, the game encourages persistence – failing doesn’t set you back, so you can keep trying without penalty.
Beyond being a challenging platformer, Celeste is a really inspiring game. It encourages players to keep striving for their goals, no matter what difficulties they face. The game’s story, centered around Madeline, is especially powerful and memorable.
Red Dead Redemption 2 Set a New Standard For Open World Games
Red Dead Redemption 2 is an open-world game that takes place before the events of the original Red Dead Redemption. While the first game was set in 1911, after the Wild West era had largely ended, Red Dead Redemption 2 is primarily set in 1899, during the final years of the Wild West.
Red Dead Redemption 2 offers a truly expansive open-world experience, especially for a game set in the Wild West. Beyond following the main story and character missions, players are free to explore the detailed and beautiful landscapes, and even cause trouble by interacting with the world and its inhabitants.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is currently Rockstar Games’ largest title, though the upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI, planned for release in late 2026, is expected to surpass it. Widely considered one of the greatest games of all time, Red Dead Redemption 2’s immersive open world and compelling story ensure its lasting legacy.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Will Take Gamers’ Breath Away
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is an action-adventure game that takes place towards the end of the often-complicated Zelda timeline. In the game, Link must once again save Zelda from Ganon, but this time, the journey is bigger and more epic than ever before.
At the time, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was the largest Zelda game ever created in terms of its world size. Link has more optional quests than in any previous game, and completing them requires exploring the stunning landscapes of Hyrule. Players need to be careful, though – even seemingly empty areas often contain enemies.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild offers a massive world with endless things to do, even beyond the main quest. It also feels richer in story and characters than previous 3D Zelda games, adding a surprising amount of depth.
