Now that Stranger Things has finished its initial run, Netflix has been searching for another hit show to take its place. While series like Wednesday and Bridgerton are popular, finding one with the same broad appeal as the Duffer Brothers’ show has been challenging. However, it appears Netflix may have found its next big franchise – one that could be successful for many years, if audiences continue to enjoy it.
As a reviewer, I’ve been watching the numbers, and it’s clear Netflix’s One Piece is a huge hit! The release of Season 2 in early March really boosted viewership, and according to The Hollywood Reporter, both seasons combined racked up an incredible 1.62 billion minutes watched. That made it the most-streamed original series for the week of March 9th to 15th, according to Nielsen. In fact, it was the best week One Piece has ever had since it premiered in 2023. It seems like when Season 2 dropped on March 10th, a lot of subscribers decided to binge-watch everything – both seasons landed in Netflix’s Top 10 at the same time, which is pretty impressive!
Following a highly successful first season in 2023, it was expected that Netflix would create another strong installment of the series. However, One Piece Season 2 exceeded expectations in almost every way. Netflix invested even more in this season, delivering a larger scope, more thrilling action, and a more emotionally resonant story. Critics continue to love the show, and it currently maintains a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – a rare achievement for a live-action manga adaptation. While viewership numbers aren’t quite as high as Bridgerton‘s earlier this year, One Piece is poised to become a long-term hit for Netflix.
The second season of One Piece is a hit for good reason! It follows the Straw Hat crew as they venture into the Grand Line, a dangerous part of the ocean filled with powerful new friends and foes from the original story. The familiar main cast – Iñaki Godoy as Luffy, Emily Rudd as Nami, Mackenyu as Zoro, Jacob Romero Gibson as Usopp, and Taz Skylar as Sanji – return, and audiences are introduced to several memorable characters who will be key players in future seasons, including Mikaela Hoover as Tony Tony Chopper, Lera Abova as Miss All-Sunday, and Joe Manganiello as Mr. 0.
Netflix is really committed to its live-action adaptation of One Piece and is already well into making a third season. They renewed the show months before the second season premiered in March, which allowed the team to start working on new episodes right away. Currently, One Piece Season 3 is expected to arrive in late 2027, only a little over a year after Season 2. This quick turnaround is unusual for expensive Netflix shows – series like Stranger Things and Wednesday typically have much longer gaps between seasons.
