Netflix has announced when its new Ghostbusters TV series will premiere, and a member of the original cast will be joining the show in a new capacity.
Netflix has announced that a new animated Ghostbusters series is coming in 2027, with Dan Aykroyd returning as an executive producer.
Dan Aykroyd is famous for playing Ray Stantz in the original Ghostbusters movie from 1984, and he even helped write the script alongside Harold Ramis. He’s continued to play the character in several sequels, including Ghostbusters II (1989), Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021), and the recent Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024).
Dan Aykroyd appeared briefly in the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot as a taxi driver, and also worked behind the scenes as an executive producer on both Afterlife and Frozen Empire.
Dan Aykroyd will be joined by Ben Hibon, Elliott Kalan, Jason Reitman, Gil Kenan, and Amie Karp as executive producers on the project.
As a big Ghostbusters fan, I remember the franchise has actually tried the TV route before. Way back in 1986, ABC launched The Real Ghostbusters, a cartoon that was surprisingly good and ran for six whole seasons! People really seemed to love it too – it’s got an 83% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is pretty impressive even now.
The original actors from the first film—Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, Rick Moranis, and Annie Potts—didn’t return for The Real Ghostbusters animated series. Instead, Frank Welker, Lorenzo Music (later Dave Coulier), Maurice LaMarche, Rodger Bumpass, and Annie Potts voiced the characters of Ray Stantz, Peter Venkman, Egon Spengler, Louis Tully, and Janine Melnitz, respectively.
In 1997, a cartoon series called Extreme Ghostbusters debuted, running for one season in syndication. The voice cast included Billy West, Rino Romano, Tara Strong, Alfonso Ribeiro, Jason Marsden, Maurice LaMarche, and Pat Musick.
The new Ghostbusters series coming to Netflix in 2027 will coincide with the 30th anniversary of Extreme Ghostbusters and the 43rd anniversary of the Ghostbusters franchise overall. While details about the story are still under wraps, the series will be set within the established Ghostbusters universe.
The actors who will be in the movie haven’t been revealed yet, so it’s unclear if Dan Aykroyd will do voice work in addition to his role as a producer.
Before creating Ghostbusters – the story of a group who hunt and capture ghosts – Dan Aykroyd was famous for his work on Saturday Night Live, where he was both a performer and a writer, and for his role in The Blues Brothers.
Beyond those projects, he also appeared in films like Trading Places, Dragnet, Caddyshack II, Driving Miss Daisy, My Girl, Chaplin, Coneheads, and Soul Man. He won an Emmy Award and received several nominations for his writing work on Saturday Night Live.
Dan Aykroyd is back with the world of Ghostbusters through a new animated series coming to Netflix. Plus, fans can look forward to an animated movie and another sequel, titled Frozen Empire, continuing the franchise.
