Despite being incredibly popular and launching a huge movie franchise, one book from the 2000s has been named the “Worst Book of All Time.” While some books become massive entertainment empires, expanding beyond their pages into movies and more, not every bestseller is considered a great work of art.
J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings are still the most successful fantasy series, having spawned huge movie franchises and tons of merchandise. George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire showed that fantasy could also be a hit with adult TV audiences. The popularity of young adult dystopian novels like The Hunger Games, Maze Runner, and Divergent in the 2010s established a formula for creating successful movie trilogies. And Stephen King’s extensive collection of horror novels continues to be a major part of American popular culture, constantly inspiring new adaptations for film and television.
Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight is another major success story. It sparked a global craze by blending supernatural themes with teen romance, building a dedicated fanbase despite what critics said.
Twilight Is Named The “Worst Book Of All Time” On Goodreads
Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight Saga Is Voted The Worst Book Series Ever
Goodreads readers have spoken, and the results are clear: Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight is considered the worst book of all time. It received 5,240 votes, significantly more than the second-place winner, Breaking Dawn (3,974 votes), which is also part of the Twilight series. New Moon came in third with 3,584 votes, and Eclipse took fourth place with 3,272 votes, meaning the top four ‘worst books’ are all from the same series.
| Goodreads’ ‘Worst Books’ Rankings | Author | Votes |

| Breaking Down | Stephanie Meyer | 3,974 |
| New Moon | Stephanie Meyer | 3,584 |

| Scientology: The Fundamentals of Thought | L. Ron Hubbard | 1.006 |
| The Twilight Saga | Stephanie Meyer | 973 |
| The Da Vinci Code | Dan Brown | 888 |
The Twilight books dominate the “Worst Books of All Time” list on Goodreads, taking the top four positions. The entire Twilight series also appears at number nine, with nearly a thousand votes. Other popular series on the list include the Fifty Shades books by E.L. James (ranked fifth, twenty-sixth, and thirty-fourth) and Dan Brown’s Robert Langdon series (ranked tenth, thirtieth, and eighty-fourth). Stephanie Meyer’s The Host also makes an appearance at number fifty, receiving 268 votes.
Is Twilight Really That Bad?
Twilight Isn’t A Modern Classic, But Its Hate Is Overblown
Many critics find the writing in Twilight to be repetitive and tell the reader what’s happening instead of letting them experience it, especially when describing Edward Cullen’s looks. More seriously, the relationship between Edward and Bella is often seen as unhealthy and overly dependent. Edward’s desire to protect Bella sometimes crosses the line into controlling behavior, and Bella’s happiness relies completely on Edward’s approval. These issues, along with the controversial ‘imprinting’ storyline in later books, make the story problematic for many readers.
The Twilight series, like Justin Bieber’s music around 2008-2012 (and, interestingly, Bieber has two books listed on Goodreads!), faced a lot of the same criticism and mockery. Both became targets for jokes and online parodies, largely because they were popular with teenage girls – a dynamic that often meant discussions about quality were lost in waves of social media ridicule. Now, nearly twenty years later, the negative feelings towards Twilight seem to have faded, and it’s become clear that the initial backlash was excessive.
Goodreads’ list of “Worst Books of All Time” is based on opinion, not objective quality. Surprisingly, well-known classics like To Kill a Mockingbird and Fahrenheit 451 rank higher than Donald Trump’s How to Get Rich. Even books like Catch-22, Dune, and 1984 are considered worse by some Goodreads users than Hannah Montana – Songs from and Inspired by the Hit TV Series: Recorder Fun! Pack. In fact, this list places books like Animal Farm and The Catcher in the Rye below that same children’s book.
