The trailer for Marvel’s upcoming show, The Punisher: One Last Kill, suggests a character who debuted in the Marvel Cinematic Universe nine years ago will die. This one-hour special premieres on Disney+ May 12th, right after the season finale of Daredevil: Born Again, and will continue Daredevil’s storyline.
With the upcoming release of Punisher: One Last Kill, Marvel and Disney are sharing more details about Frank Castle’s return. The first trailer for the special seems to quietly confirm the death of Curtis Hoyle (Jason R. Moore), a character who first appeared in season one of The Punisher over nine years ago.
In The Punisher, Curtis was a close friend of Frank’s, and the two fought together in the Marine Corps with Billy Russo, who later became Jigsaw. After leaving the military, Curtis encouraged Frank to attend a veterans’ support group and even became his therapist. Sadly, it appears Curtis has died before the events of The Punisher: One Last Kill.
The Trailer For The Punisher: One Last Kill Implies Curtis Hoyle’s Death
While not confirmed, the trailer for the upcoming Punisher: One Last Kill strongly suggests Curtis Hoyle is deceased. Curtis narrates much of the trailer, starting by offering Frank Castle support and a listening ear. However, his voice-over later shifts, with him seemingly mocking Frank and claiming God won’t forgive him.
The strongest proof that Curtis is dead by the time of The Punisher: One Last Kill is that he isn’t actually shown in the trailer. The few times we see what seems to be Curtis, he quickly appears and disappears, suggesting he’s a hallucination Frank is having. His voice also sounds distant and dreamlike, as if Frank is only hearing echoes of his friend’s voice in his head.
The simplest explanation for Curtis’s voiceovers and appearances only in Frank’s hallucinations is that he’s dead. This would also explain why Frank seems to be haunted by Curtis – they were very close in the original series, and Curtis often helped Frank with his emotional struggles. Curtis essentially represented Frank’s conscience and his desire for healing, so his death would understandably be deeply traumatic for Frank.
Considering everything, it appears Curtis will likely die before or at the beginning of Punisher: One Last Kill. He was still alive when Frank last appeared in Daredevil: Born Again season 1, but their connection could have made Curtis a target. If Curtis does die, Frank would probably blame himself, adding to his existing trauma.
Curtis’ Death Could Be To Punisher What Foggy’s Death Was To Daredevil
One possible reason Curtis Hoyle was killed off in The Punisher: One Last Kill is to create a similar impact as Foggy Nelson’s death in the first season of Daredevil: Born Again. In Born Again, Bullseye, acting on Vanessa Fisk’s orders, killed Foggy, which deeply affected Matt Murdock and led him to try and kill Bullseye – a violation of his strict rule against killing. This event caused Matt to temporarily abandon his role as Daredevil for much of the season.
Similar to how losing Foggy affected Matt Murdock, the potential death of Curtis in Punisher: One Last Kill could be a turning point for Frank Castle. Losing Curtis – who is Frank’s friend, combat partner, and therapist – would be a huge blow. The story also suggests Frank is looking for something more than just revenge, and Curtis’s death could be the event that pushes him to find it, as hinted at by Marvel.
The title, ‘Punisher: One Last Kill,’ suggests a major change for Frank Castle. It’s possible this story will show him deciding to stop killing and instead focus on capturing criminals without using lethal force, and Curtis’s death could be the catalyst. Throughout the series, Curtis encouraged Frank to find a path to healing, not just revenge. Curtis’s murder would likely drive Frank to hunt down the killers, but it could also inspire him to honor Curtis’s memory by adopting non-lethal methods.
