When ‘Beast’ came out in theaters in 2022, it didn’t perform as well as many hoped. But now, the film is gaining popularity on Netflix, giving it a second chance after a disappointing run in cinemas.
Currently, the movie Beast is the most popular film on Netflix in the U.S., according to FlixPatrol. It’s been at the top of the charts for several days since its release on April 7th. While critics generally liked the film—giving it a 68% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with audiences awarding it a 77% score—it didn’t perform well in theaters. Worldwide, it earned less than $60 million despite costing $36 million to make.
Beast Is a Tense and Action-Packed 90-Minute Film
Okay, so I’ve been reading what other movie fans are saying about Beast, and the general feeling is that it delivers a solid dose of thrilling, edge-of-your-seat action. It’s not breaking any new ground for the survival horror genre, but it doesn’t need to. What really stood out to me, and to a lot of other viewers, is how tightly paced it is – at 90 minutes, there’s no wasted time. Plus, it looks fantastic. The filmmakers did a great job of keeping things focused with a small cast and limited locations, avoiding that feeling of things getting unnecessarily complicated. It’s a really efficient and engaging thriller.
Directed by Baltasar Kormákur and written by Ryan Engle (based on a story by Jaime Primak Sullivan), the film centers on Dr. Nate Samuels (Idris Elba), a father grieving the loss of his wife. He takes his two teenage daughters to a South African wildlife reserve, hoping to rebuild their connection. Their trip turns into a terrifying struggle for survival when a lion, driven to violence after poachers killed its family, attacks them.
Idris Elba Leads the Cast of Beast
Iyana Halley (known from Licorice Pizza) and Leah Sava Jeffries play Dr. Samuels’ daughters. Sharlto Copley (The Witcher) appears as a wildlife biologist and long-time friend of Dr. Samuels. The film also stars Naledi Mogadime, Tafara Nyatsansa, Martin Murno, and Ronald McWanazi.
Currently, Beast is still the most popular movie on Netflix, and it’s unclear when that will change. It’s performing better than several other films, including the Dwayne Johnson sequel Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and the documentary The Truth and Tragedy of Moriah Wilson. Rounding out the top five are the animated favorite Madagascar and the action thriller Black and Blue, both of which are gaining popularity.
Beast is streaming on Netflix.
