The first episode of the long-awaited Daemons of the Shadow Realm adaptation is now available. This is the first new series from Hiromu Arakawa, the creator of Fullmetal Alchemist, and it’s generated a lot of excitement. Naturally, that also means there’s a lot of expectation for it to be as good as her previous work. But this series isn’t the only new anime facing high expectations in the coming months.
Anime is becoming increasingly popular, and that means a lot of new shows are facing high expectations from both the animation studios and fans. These series are either fresh takes on beloved classics or share similarities with other hit anime. Because of all the anticipation, everyone will be watching closely when these shows debut to see if they live up to the hype.
Daemons of the Shadow Realm is set in a world where humans fight alongside supernatural beings called Daemons. The story follows twin siblings, Yuru and Asa, as they try to reunite, believing they hold the key to saving the world. But their journey won’t be easy, as powerful enemies are already working against them.
Many anime fans have incredibly high expectations for Daemons of the Shadow Realm, perhaps more than any other show this year. It’s been a while since Fullmetal Alchemist aired – a series widely considered a classic – and viewers are eager to see if this new show can live up to that legacy. Studio BONES, known for its work on Fullmetal Alchemist, also faces pressure to prove that this spin-off film can surpass the quality of their earlier work and solidify their reputation.
Nanoka had a peaceful but uneventful childhood after losing her parents in a car accident. One day, while walking near where the accident happened, she discovers a mysterious gateway that takes her back in time to the early 1900s. There, she meets Mao, a skilled swordsman who battles demons. Intrigued by her family history, Nanoka starts traveling to the past regularly, joining Mao as he hunts demons and hoping to uncover their connection.
Rumiko Takahashi’s MAO is her first major new anime series since Rin-ne finished in 2017. Interestingly, her older works have recently become popular again, with remakes of classics like Urusei Yatsura and Ranma 1/2. This means MAO has a lot to live up to, both as a new story and in light of the renewed attention on Takahashi’s overall body of work.
I’ve been watching Ghost in the Shell, and it’s set in a future where people are deeply connected to machines – some even live in entirely artificial bodies. The story follows Japan’s Public Security Section 9, a team dedicated to stopping criminals who use technology to commit crimes, even taking control of other people’s bodies through hacking. But they face a real challenge when a super-skilled hacker, known only as the Puppet Master, appears – and Section 9 quickly realizes they might not have the tools they need to win.
While Ghost in the Shell has seen some disappointing sequels and spin-offs, those projects often strayed from the original story. This new series from Studio Science SARU is different – it’s based directly on Masamune Shirow’s manga and offers a fresh take on the classic. Early reactions from fans are positive, but it will be a challenge to create a series that reaches the same level as the first two Ghost in the Shell films.
In Nanoha EXCEEDS, Earth is facing destruction from alien invaders called the Invasion Species. To combat this threat, humanity establishes EXCEEDS, a fighting force dedicated to protecting the planet. Shiina Kuze battles these aliens while also looking after her sister, but soon discovers she’s caught up in a much larger conflict.
The Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha series is a long-running and popular magical girl franchise that began in the early 2000s. While it previously had films, the last new installment was the 2018 movie Nanoha: Detonation. Now, with EXCEEDS, the series is returning to television, and it needs to be a strong release to prove the franchise still has potential and usher in a new chapter for fans.
I’m totally fascinated by this world! So, picture the future – we’ve built these incredible human-shaped robots called Labors to make life easier, mostly for construction work. But, naturally, things get complicated. Pretty soon, criminals start using Labors for, well, bad stuff. That’s where it gets really cool – the authorities responded by creating the Special Vehicles Section, a whole police division dedicated to fighting Labor crime! They built their own robots, called Patlabors – or Patrol Labors – and they’re tasked with handling all sorts of dangerous situations involving these rogue machines. It’s a really dynamic setup!
Patlabor EZY marks the return of the popular anime series, Mobile Police Patlabor. The original Patlabor was a hit in the 1990s, spawning several movies, OVAs, and a TV show. After a couple of disappointing films in the early 2000s, the franchise faded, with only a live-action series appearing in the 2010s. Now, Patlabor EZY is a dedicated effort to revive the anime on television. Although it’s a short series of just eight episodes, it carries the weight of bringing the franchise back to its former glory.
Magic Knight Rayearth tells the story of three eighth-grade girls who are unexpectedly transported from a school trip to Tokyo Tower to the magical world of Cephiro. They soon discover they must rescue Princess Emeraude, whose wishes are the source of Cephiro’s life and stability. Despite having no prior experience, the girls must learn to use their newfound elemental powers and work together to save the princess – and find a way back home.
Magic Knight Rayearth is a truly excellent and influential isekai series that came out before the 2010s boom. It was incredibly popular in both America and Japan, and helped launch the careers of the artists in the group CLAMP. This new remake is designed to celebrate the series’ 30th anniversary, so expectations are very high. After almost two years in development, fans are eagerly awaiting its release.
When it was announced that Dragon Ball Super would return, fans were incredibly excited. But Toei Animation went above and beyond, revealing they wouldn’t simply re-animate the story from the manga. Instead, they decided to start over with a completely new take on the Battle of the Gods arc.
When Dragon Ball Super first revisited the story of Battle of the Gods, fans weren’t impressed with the animation, finding it noticeably worse than the original movie. This means the new version, Dragon Ball Super: Beerus, really needs to step up its game – it has to look better than the TV series and at least as good as the film.
This summer, the popular webtoon Tomb Raider King is being adapted into a show. The story is set in a world where mysterious tombs suddenly appear, and those who explore them gain amazing powers. After being betrayed by his boss, the main character, Jooheon, is sent back in time to before the tombs appeared. Now, with knowledge of what’s to come, he plans to use his advantage to his benefit.
It’s clear Tomb Raider King is designed as a continuing series. The main character even resembles Sung Jin-woo, so viewers will likely notice the connection right away. But Solo Leveling was a huge hit, and any anime trying to replicate that success faces a lot of expectations. If this new series doesn’t measure up, the similarities could be seen as imitation, and it might fail to gain an audience.
