Prime Video’s 8-Part Crime Thriller Series Has One Of Its Best Casts

Prime Video offers many classic thriller series, but one stands out for having one of the greatest casts ever seen in a TV thriller. Currently, streaming services like Netflix, Peacock, Hulu, Apple TV+, and Prime Video are all competing to become the top destination for must-watch thriller shows.

While Prime Video’s popular show Reacher is a strong crime thriller, Netflix currently offers a wider range of captivating murder mysteries. Just in January 2026, Netflix released several new titles, including adaptations of Harlan Coben’s work (Run Away), Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials, and the suspenseful thriller His & Hers. To compete with this, Prime Video’s Scarpetta series needed a particularly strong cast.

Prime Video’s Scarpetta Has An All-Time Great Thriller Cast

Similar to popular thrillers like Prime Video’s Reacher and Cross, Scarpetta is based on bestselling novels that have been reader favorites for years. This first-ever TV adaptation of Patricia Cornwell’s series follows forensic pathologist Kay Scarpetta, weaving together mysteries from her past and present.

Season one of Scarpetta follows a compelling story: a young Dr. Scarpetta investigates a serial killer, and years later, her older self questions if she convicted the right person when similar crimes resurface. While the plot is strong, the show really shines because of its impressive and well-known actors.

Nicole Kidman portrays Dr. Kay Scarpetta in the current timeline, with Rosy McEwen playing a younger Scarpetta in flashbacks. Jamie Lee Curtis delivers a bold performance as Scarpetta’s sister, Dorothy. Ariana DeBose stars as Lucy, Scarpetta’s niece, and Bobby Cannavale plays a man caught between Dorothy and Scarpetta – he’s Dorothy’s love interest and Scarpetta’s ex-partner.

On top of everything else, Simon Baker, known for his role in The Mentalist, plays a complex FBI agent – Scarpetta’s husband – who has a hidden and questionable history. The show also features other well-known actors, like Janet Montgomery as the late wife of the main character, but the storyline involving these characters becomes rather intricate.

Scarpetta’s Cast Couldn’t Save Season 1 From Major Issues

The first season of Scarpetta attempts to cover too much ground, as demonstrated by the poorly received Janet storyline. This leads to a cluttered and overwhelming feel. With a critical rating of 60% on Rotten Tomatoes, a more focused and streamlined season one might have been more successful.

Good news for fans: Scarpetta has been renewed for a second season, giving the Prime Video thriller a chance to improve. The show boasts a talented cast and deserves the opportunity to really shine.
