Maul Shadow Lord Review: Disney+’s Latest Star Wars Series Breaks New Ground

The new animated series, Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, marks a strong start to Dave Filoni’s leadership of the Star Wars franchise. It’s a visually stunning and fast-paced action story with impressive fight scenes, and a welcome return for the popular villain, Darth Maul. With Season 2 already confirmed, this first installment suggests fans can expect great things under Filoni’s direction.

Darth Maul quickly became a fan favorite when he appeared in The Phantom Menace. Everything about him – his striking, villainous appearance, unique dual-bladed lightsaber, impressive fighting skills, and the intimidating presence brought by Ray Park – resonated with audiences. After Obi-Wan defeated him by cutting him in half, many worried that Maul would be gone for good from the Star Wars galaxy.

Disney often responded to what fans wanted, and over time, they found ways to include Darth Maul in different shows and animated projects. His role in The Clone Wars was particularly significant, establishing that he had survived and eventually led to his escape from prison in Season 7. It’s been six years since Maul last appeared on screen, and fans have been eagerly awaiting his return.

Following the Clone Wars, Darth Maul became one of the most formidable Sith ever, fueled by a desire for revenge against both the Jedi and the Sith led by Emperor Palpatine, who had abandoned him. The comic series Maul – Shadow Lord is unique because it tells the story of a well-known villain already established in the Star Wars universe, rather than focusing on a rising Dark Side user.

Although The Book of Boba Fett featured a character who once fought against the Rebel Alliance, Boba Fett operated as a criminal rather than a villain connected to the Jedi or the dark side of the Force. This is a good moment for Star Wars to explore different types of stories.

Stellar Performances Cement a Great Addition to the Star Wars Galaxy

Set about a year after the Clone Wars ended, Maul – Shadow Lord follows Maul (played by Sam Witwer, who also voiced the character in The Clone Wars and other projects) as he tries to restore his criminal empire on the planet Janix and find someone to train as his apprentice. He sets his sights on Devon Izara, a Twi’lek Jedi who is hiding after the execution of Order 66 along with her Jedi Master, Eeko-Dio-Daki (Dennis Haysbert).

Detective Brander Lawson (Wagner Moura), who works outside the control of the Galactic Empire on the planet Janix, is pursuing Darth Maul, aided by his droid companion, Two-Boots (Richard Ayoade).

It’s no surprise that Ray Park, who consistently delivers a compelling performance as Darth Maul, shines in this role once again. He truly embodies the character – portraying Maul as intelligent, sophisticated, and capable of manipulation, all while hinting at a dangerous, barely contained fury that surfaces when pushed to the limit. It’s a fantastic and nuanced performance.

Wagner Moura delivers a fantastic vocal performance as Brander, a character who is focused on business but naturally charming. While Brander is serious, Moura’s performance adds a relatable quality that makes him feel believable within a world of characters with superpowers and laser swords.

Adlon is a talented actor who brings real emotion to her portrayal of Devon Izara, a character who is under pressure and often frustrated. However, her voice doesn’t quite match the character at times, sounding too youthful and polished for the situations Izara finds herself in.

It’s amusing to see Ayoade move from fixing computers on The IT Crowd to being the technical difficulty in Shadow Lord. He perfectly captures the character of Two-Boots through his voice, and Haysbert brings a powerful, commanding presence to his role as the older, animated Jedi.

‘Maul – Shadow Lord’ Boasts Gorgeous Animation & Strong Combat

The Star Wars animated shows on Disney+ are generally very good, but the Shadow Lord series is exceptional. It features multiple groups with different goals, which leads to plenty of conflict, unexpected partnerships, and plot twists. The story follows Devon and her mentor as they try to evade the Empire, who are determined to capture them.

Maul is determined to defend Devon and bring it into the fold, even though she personally rejects the Empire’s ideals. Brander, on the other hand, is frustrated by the disorder the conflict has caused and also dislikes the Empire. This creates a compelling dynamic, fueling both large-scale battles and complex political maneuvering.

The show also features fantastic lightsaber and action sequences, which is essential for a series focused on Maul, a character renowned for his fighting skills. These battles are well-executed and complement the show’s shootouts and thrilling escapes.

I don’t want to give away any spoilers for the big battle in Episode 6 – let’s just say Marrok is involved – but it’s seriously well-choreographed and visually stunning. The animation throughout the series really makes the fight scenes pop, consistently looking fantastic with clever use of lighting, shadows, and color. As a cinema devotee, I was really impressed!

The series is generally very good, although a few minor details could be improved. It mostly manages to balance its different storylines effectively, but the plot involving Brander doesn’t always feel fully fleshed out or connected to the main story.

While Adlon’s voice might not perfectly fit the character, it doesn’t detract from her strong performance. Overall, this is a fantastic addition to the Star Wars universe and it’s great to see Maul back.

As a huge Star Wars fan, I was really impressed with Maul – Shadow Lord. It feels like it’s breaking new ground for the franchise, and thankfully, it’s not another story trying to make the Empire seem sympathetic. Instead, it cleverly opens up possibilities for exploring all sorts of fascinating characters on the Dark Side – I’m really hoping we get a Count Dooku series next! What I loved most was how well it showcased the characters themselves – the voice acting was fantastic, the fight scenes were gripping, and the animation was just beautiful. It’s a total win for the galaxy far, far away.

Final Rating: 8/10
