A new Lord of the Rings movie, written by Stephen Colbert, is expected to finally introduce a beloved character that fans have waited over 25 years to see. Titled The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past, this film is one of two planned movies that will expand the world of Middle-earth created by J.R.R. Tolkien.
Andy Serkis’ upcoming film, The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, will be released on December 17, 2027. The story follows Aragorn and Gandalf as they search for Gollum after he escapes from the elves of Mirkwood—an event briefly described by Legolas in The Fellowship of the Ring book.
The movie, titled Shadow of the Past, has been in development for a while, but was just officially announced. Warner Bros. shared in March 2026 that Stephen Colbert and his son are collaborating with screenwriter Peter McGee, along with the original Lord of the Rings team – Philippa Boyens, Fran Walsh, and Peter Jackson – on a new film that will follow The Hunt for Gollum. Though it might be surprising, Stephen Colbert is actually a huge fan and expert on The Lord of the Rings. Beyond hosting panels at Comic-Con about the Amazon series and The Hobbit films, he even had a small role as a spy in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.
Stephen Colbert’s deep love for the original books makes him a great choice to write a Lord of the Rings movie. Like many Tolkien fans, he believes a particular character, Tom Bombadil, was left out of the films and wants to focus his movie on the parts of the story that feature the Fellowship and Bombadil.
The New Lord Of The Rings Movie Will Finally Show Tom Bombadil
Fourteen years after Frodo’s departure to the Undying Lands, Shadow of the Past follows Sam, Merry, and Pippin as they revisit the places where their great adventure took place. Meanwhile, Sam’s daughter, Elanor, uncovers a long-hidden secret about the journey and becomes determined to learn why the War of the Ring almost ended in defeat before it truly began.
Stephen Colbert mentioned a storyline that’s sparked rumors about Sean Astin, Billy Boyd, and Dominic Monaghan potentially returning. This storyline will cover chapters 3 to 8 of The Fellowship of the Ring, specifically the parts of the book from “Three is Company” to “Fog on the Barrow-Downs”.
| Adapted The Fellowship of the Ring Chapters in Shadow of the Past | |
|---|---|
| Number | Title |
| 3 | Three Is Company |
| 4 | A Shortcut to Mushrooms |
| 5 | A Conspiracy Unmasked |
| 6 | The Old Forest |
| 7 | In the House of Tom Bombadil |
| 8 | Fog On the Barrow-Downs |
Merry and Pippin rejoin Sam and Frodo as they travel, and to escape the Black Riders pursuing them, the four hobbits enter the Old Forest near Buckland, which is close to the Shire. Inside the forest, they face dangerous, evil trees and a spooky, ancient place called the Barrow-downs.
During their journey through the Old Forest, the hobbits encounter Tom Bombadil, one of J.R.R. Tolkien’s most enigmatic characters. Tom is a cheerful, song-loving man who lives in a comfortable cottage with his remarkable wife, Goldberry. Interestingly, the Ring’s power has no effect on Tom, and he appears to have some control over it.
J.R.R. Tolkien deliberately left the character of Tom Bombadil a mystery, leading to many different interpretations – some believe he’s a nature spirit, a type of angel within Tolkien’s world, or even a representation of the author himself. Bombadil appears in chapters 6-8 of The Fellowship of the Ring and helps Sam, Frodo, Merry, and Pippin escape the dangerous Old Forest. Because the upcoming game, Shadow of the Past, focuses on this part of the story, Tom Bombadil is likely to be an important character.
The LOTR Movies Were Beaten To Tom Bombadil By Amazon
Though Tom Bombadil wasn’t included in the Lord of the Rings movies, he appears in season 2 of Amazon Prime’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, portrayed by Rory Kinnear. However, similar to many aspects of The Rings of Power, this version isn’t a close match to the original story.
Tom Bombadil appears only in The Fellowship of the Ring and isn’t part of the backstory material used for The Rings of Power. Therefore, his encounter with the Stranger (Daniel Weyman) in the show is a new creation. The upcoming film, Shadow of the Past, aims to portray Bombadil more accurately as he’s depicted in Tolkien’s original books.
Peter Jackson included subtle references to Tom Bombadil in his Lord of the Rings trilogy, which some fans may have noticed. For example, in the extended edition of The Two Towers, Merry and Pippin are caught in the roots of a menacing tree – a scene reminiscent of when the Hobbits get stuck in the Old Forest in The Fellowship of the Ring.
Treebeard arrives to help, using a song that’s the same one Tom Bombadil sings to protect the Hobbits earlier in the story. In both versions of The Two Towers, Merry and Pippin observe the orcs felling trees in Fangorn Forest. Merry recalls a strange power in the Old Forest near Buckland that seemed to make the trees come alive.
Now Is The Right Time For Lord Of The Rings To Bring Back Tom Bombadil
As a huge fan of the Lord of the Rings films, I always wondered about Tom Bombadil. But honestly, after hearing Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens talk about adapting the books, it makes total sense why he didn’t make the cut. They were really focused on keeping the story moving and making sure everything felt clear, and apparently those chapters with Bombadil, while lovely in the books, just slowed things down and didn’t really push the main plot forward. They really prioritized momentum, and I can appreciate that as a filmmaker’s choice.
As a huge Tolkien fan, I always loved how his books could really take their time, especially in The Fellowship of the Ring. But let’s be real, a film is a different beast. Peter Jackson had to figure out how to tell this massive story in a way that wouldn’t lose the audience. That meant making some tough choices about what to cut. While I adore Tom Bombadil and his place in Tolkien’s world, the chapters focusing on him – those from three to eight – aren’t essential to understanding Frodo’s journey with the Ring, which is really what the films are about.
Tom Bombadil could be a great character for a separate story, but his enigmatic nature wouldn’t fit within the main Lord of the Rings saga. A movie focusing on him would get bogged down because audiences would immediately ask why Frodo doesn’t just give the Ring to Bombadil. The books allow Tolkien to answer that question gradually, building intrigue over many chapters, but a film needs more immediate answers.
A spin-off movie could be a good fit for Tom Bombadil. Even if The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past isn’t a huge success, it will naturally be seen as a less central story than Peter Jackson’s films. This creates the ideal space for a character like Bombadil – someone who isn’t crucial to the main Lord of the Rings plot, but who adds depth and meaning to smaller, more focused moments.
