The RoboCop series has been quiet for more than ten years, but a new movie is now in the works and seems to be making real progress after several years of planning.
According to a recent report in The Ankler (shared by Cosmic Book News), there’s some restlessness within Amazon Prime Video as people wait to see how new head of global television, Peter Friedlander, will change the platform’s original TV shows. While Friedlander has only been in the role for under a year, the entertainment industry moves fast, and with frequent changes in leadership at Amazon’s streaming service, there’s a desire to see progress quickly.
Fans of RoboCop will be pleased to hear that a television series featuring the character is reportedly one of the projects already approved by Friedlander. This news comes about two years after a RoboCop series for Prime Video was initially announced. That project had a promising creative team, including showrunner Peter Ocko (known for Dead Like Me and Boston Legal) and executive producer James Wan, the director of blockbuster films like The Conjuring and Furious 7.

Initially, the new series seemed like a remake of the 1987 film, described as a story about a powerful company teaming up with police to create a high-tech, half-human, crime-fighting officer. However, this approach came after director Neill Blomkamp’s attempt to create a direct sequel to the original RoboCop – a project called RoboCop Returns – fell through. Blomkamp’s vision would have ignored all subsequent sequels and the 2014 reboot.
If Amazon’s RoboCop series restarts the story from the beginning, it likely means Peter Weller, the star of the first two movies, won’t be involved. Despite being in his late 70s, Weller is still frequently asked about returning to the role, and he’s expressed openness to it as recently as last year. In March 2025, he said he’d consider a reboot if the script was strong and the compensation was fair, though he jokingly added he wouldn’t film it in North Korea.
