10 Spider-Man Spin-Offs Sony Needs To Make After Spider-Noir

The Spider-Man Universe created by Sony is most compelling when it focuses on Spider-Man himself or different versions of him from across the multiverse. The success of the live-action Spider-Noir series, starring Nicolas Cage, demonstrates that these unique, character-focused Spider-Man stories can really resonate with audiences. This opens up exciting possibilities to delve even deeper into the many different realities within the Spider-Verse.

Sony Pictures scored big hits with Into the Spider-Verse and Across the Spider-Verse, and they’re hoping the upcoming Beyond the Spider-Verse (due in 2027) continues that success. But there’s also huge potential in telling stories about individual Spider-Man characters and their worlds, as we’re seeing with the new Spider-Noir series on Prime Video. Nicolas Cage stars as the detective Ben Reilly in a 1930s New York setting – he previously voiced Spider-Man Noir in the animated Spider-Verse movies.

The idea of more Spider-Man spin-offs, whether they’re live-action or animated, is really exciting. The Spider-Verse concept is incredibly versatile, allowing for stories set in everything from futuristic worlds and ancient times to stories with robots and clones. The possibilities are almost endless, and all that’s really needed is a Spider-Man character leading the way.

If Sony wants to keep exploring different versions of Spider-Man, like they did with the unusual Spider-Noir project, the Spider-Verse franchise could become something really amazing. It could become a collection of standalone stories, without needing everything to be connected. With that in mind, here are ten Spider-Man characters who would be great leads for future spin-off shows.

Spider-Gwen

Spider-Gwen, also known as Ghost-Spider, is a clear opportunity for Sony to create more successful content. Voiced by Hailee Steinfeld, Gwen Stacy’s unique world—visually striking with its watercolor style, as seen in Across the Spider-Verse—is ripe for exploration. A standalone animated series or movie could delve into her life and adventures, going beyond her connection to Miles Morales and focusing on her personal journey and past.

However, a live-action show or movie could be really interesting if it highlighted Gwen’s life as a drummer – showing what she does when she’s not being a superhero or traveling to different dimensions. As far as we know, a Spider-Gwen project is one of the few Spider-Man related projects Sony is currently working on.

Spider Punk

Spider-Punk could be Sony’s most visually striking Spider-Man project, and that’s a good thing. Hobie Brown’s rebellious spirit and refusal to follow rules made him a fan favorite in Across the Spider-Verse, and a dedicated series would allow his unique style to truly shine.

I absolutely loved Daniel Kaluuya as Spider-Punk in Across the Spider-Verse! I really hope he gets to play Hobie again, whether it’s in another animated movie or even a live-action series. Imagine a show full of punk rock, fighting against unfair governments, and just generally sticking it to the man – that would be amazing!

An Animated Spider-Rex Series

The idea of a ‘Spider-Rex’ spin-off might seem silly, but Sony has already combined Spiderman with dinosaurs in the multiverse through ‘Across the Spider-Verse.’ Plus, Marvel Comics has actually published official ‘Spider-Rex’ comics. This means a short, animated series featuring this incredible red-and-blue dinosaur hero could be a lot of fun.

Picture Spider-Rex—a dinosaur version of Spider-Man—swinging through a prehistoric jungle. He’s battling twisted, dinosaur-themed versions of Spider-Man’s enemies, and his “spider-sense” is more about raw instinct. It’s completely over-the-top, but in the best way possible.

Spider-Man 2099

Sony Pictures should definitely develop the Spider-Man 2099 character more. Voiced by Oscar Isaac in the Spider-Verse films, Miguel O’Hara leads a team of Spider-People from across the multiverse and is fiercely determined to protect it, even if it means clashing with Miles Morales. He believes Miles, as an unexpected Spider-Man, is the source of a dangerous problem.

It would be easy to create a Spider-Man 2099 story centered on Miguel O’Hara’s history, showing his beginnings in a futuristic, rundown world and his fights against powerful, corrupt companies like Alchemax. But a solo 2099 project doesn’t need to tie into the Spider-Verse films. Just like the Spider-Noir character – the live-action version with Nicolas Cage is a separate take from the animated one – a 2099 series could have its own unique story without being constrained by existing connections.

Peni Parker & SP//dr

Peni Parker and her amazing SP//dr mech deserve their own anime series from Sony. The SP//dr design is incredibly unique within the Spider-Man universe, and Peni’s connection to it is much deeper than just controlling a machine. An anime adaptation could explore Peni’s everyday school life, the emotional impact of her father’s death, and epic battles with giant robots – it has the potential to be truly special.

The Scarlet Spider

Though he provided a lot of comedic relief in Across the Spider-Verse and was voiced by Andy Samberg, the Scarlet Spider has a compelling backstory in the comics that would make him a great fit for his own movie or series.

Ben Reilly, who inspired the name of the Spider-Noir character in live-action films, is a clone of Peter Parker. A series focusing on him could build on the exciting and memorable events of the original Clone Saga, exploring what it truly means to be Spider-Man – even for someone who isn’t the original.

Mayday Parker (Spider-Girl)

Mayday Parker, who first appeared as a baby in Across the Spider-Verse, has a lot of potential. It would be great to see a future story – either a movie or series – where she becomes Spider-Girl, just like in the comics. This would give Sony a chance to tell a compelling story about family and legacy, with Peter B. Parker mentoring his daughter, similar to the Batman Beyond animated series, but with a lighter tone. It would also be a unique way to explore family relationships within the Spider-Man universe.

Superior Spider-Man

The Superior Spider-Man storyline is a wild and dramatic chapter in Spider-Man’s history. As Peter Parker’s body fails, Doctor Octopus creates a way to switch minds with him. But Otto didn’t anticipate that he’d also inherit Peter’s strong sense of responsibility and natural heroism.

For a while there, seeing Octavius take over Peter Parker’s body and become this really intense, almost villainous Spider-Man was fascinating. He was determined to be a ‘Superior’ Spider-Man, and honestly, it felt like a totally different character. It’s a storyline that I think would be incredible to see adapted for the screen – imagine a Spider-Man who’s much more brooding and complex than we’re used to! It opens up so many possibilities for a darker take on the character.

An Animated Spider-Ham Series

Spider-Ham is a funny and unpredictable character that Sony should definitely consider developing further. He was a standout comedic highlight in Into the Spider-Verse, thanks to John Mulaney’s voice work. Since they’ve already created a short animated film featuring him, a full series could build on that success with the same kind of silly humor and over-the-top, cartoonish action seen in classic Looney Tunes cartoons.

Jessica Drew’s Spider-Woman

I truly believe a Spider-Woman project from Sony would be amazing! Jessica Drew’s story, drawing from the comics, feels like it could be this incredible, action-packed spy thriller, but with superpowers thrown in. And I loved the version of her we saw in Across the Spider-Verse – Issa Rae was fantastic! The fact that they incorporated her recent pregnancy storyline from the comics? That could add such a unique and compelling element to her own show or movie. It’s a story with so much potential!

All episodes of Spider-Noir are now streaming on MGM+ and Prime Video.
