Mortal Kombat II’s warrior princess did more than challenge herself for the role.
Mortal Kombat II is the follow-up to the 2021 film, Mortal Kombat. The story centers on Earthrealm’s greatest fighters competing in a dangerous tournament. Along with former action movie star Johnny Cage (played by Karl Urban), they must defeat powerful opponents from other worlds to prevent Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford) from conquering Earthrealm.
Adeline Rudolph, who plays Kitana in the new movie Mortal Kombat II, recently told Vogue Singapore about the intense training she underwent to play the popular character. With the sequel introducing even more fighters from the long-running video game series, Rudolph felt the pressure of portraying a key character that fans have loved for over thirty years and across multiple generations.
Like many characters in the film, Kitana has a rich history built up over several games. For the actress playing her, Rudolph, bringing the princess to life meant diving deep into years of existing story and finding a way to make it work for Mortal Kombat II. She found the process both thrilling and challenging, noting it was the first time she’d played a character with such a detailed pre-existing background.
Rudolph shared that the physical demands were one of the biggest challenges in getting ready for the film. Since she didn’t have prior martial arts experience, she needed a lot of training beforehand. She worked with Malay Kim, the stunt coordinator from Mortal Kombat II, and dedicated herself to learning tai chi, wushu, and kung fu to perform the action scenes in the sequel as convincingly as possible.
Beyond physical training, Rudolph dedicated considerable time to learning everything about Kitana from the Mortal Kombat series. She studied how the character played in the games, read her backstory, and followed the storylines she was a part of. Rudolph paid particular attention to Kitana’s family, childhood, and complex relationship with Shao Kahn, the man who raised her.
The original Mortal Kombat game came out in 1992, created by Midway Games. It started as an arcade game, but quickly became incredibly popular, growing into one of the most successful fighting game series ever. The games take place in a made-up universe with different worlds, all overseen by powerful beings called the Elder Gods.
The game takes place across several distinct realms. Earthrealm is home to heroes like Liu Kang, Kung Lao, Sonya Blade, Johnny Cage, and Jax. The dark and demonic Netherrealm features fighters such as Quan Chi and Noob Saibot. Outworld is the empire of Emperor Kahn. Orderrealm, also called Seido, is where Darrius, Dairou, and Hotaru live. Edenia is the realm of Kitana, Sindel, Jade, and Rain. Finally, Chaosrealm is inhabited by Havik.
Mortal Kombat II is currently playing in theaters now.
