1 Major Remarkably Bright Creatures Change Fixes A Book Criticism

Warning: This article includes MAJOR SPOILERS for Netflix’s Remarkably Bright Creatures!

The Netflix adaptation of Remarkably Bright Creatures addresses a common criticism of the original Shelby Van Pelt novel by altering a key relationship. While the book is widely loved, some readers found the character Cameron unlikeable and wished for more scenes featuring the octopus, Marcellus. Fortunately, the Netflix series improves the story by developing the characters more fully and strengthening their interactions.

The movie Remarkably Bright Creatures gives Cameron a more detailed and sympathetic history. The character, now in his thirties, is brought to life with a compelling performance by Lewis Pullman, adding layers of complexity. The relationship between Cameron and Marcellus is also different in the film, making Cameron more relatable. Most significantly, the story includes more scenes with Cameron and Marcellus, giving the octopus, Marcellus, a greater presence on screen.

Marcellus & Cameron Have A Relationship In Netflix’s Remarkably Bright Creatures

Okay, let’s talk about the connection – or lack thereof – between Cameron and Marcellus in Remarkably Bright Creatures. While Tova does bring them together, and they become somewhat amicable, I honestly didn’t feel a strong emotional bond develop. Cameron’s growth felt much more influenced by Tova, Avery, and Ethan; Marcellus almost felt like an afterthought in his journey. This was a bit disappointing, because the book really wants you to believe these three characters – Tova, Marcellus, and Cameron – truly become friends and deeply impact each other, but that central idea didn’t quite land for me.

I really loved seeing Cameron and Marcellus connect in the film. At first, Cameron was annoyed he had to take over Tova’s cleaning duties, but then something shifted. He started actually talking to the octopus while he worked, sharing everything – his feelings for Avery, his regrets, and just how much he longed for a real connection with someone. It was so endearing to see Marcellus, who found Cameron amusing, start to genuinely care for him, especially with that sweet little goodnight ritual every evening. It felt really special.

Giving Marcellus the octopus a connection with Cameron allows him to be more involved in the story and feel like a key character. It also made Tova’s decision to release him even more heartbreaking, especially because Cameron wasn’t there to say goodbye. He left town angry, which is why he missed the moment, but if he’d stayed, he could have been there when Tova set Marcellus free.

Despite trying to stay calm, Lewis Pullman portrays Cameron as deeply saddened when he learns Marcellus has left. He appears heartbroken, almost as if he’s about to cry, making the moment feel like a genuine loss.

Marcellus’s Desire To Help Cameron & Tova Makes More Sense In The Netflix Movie

In Remarkably Bright Creatures, Marcellus primarily views Cameron as a tool to help Tova. He understands that Cameron and Tova are secretly related, and believes revealing this connection will ease Tova’s pain over losing her son, Erik. The story doesn’t suggest Marcellus is concerned with Cameron’s own emotional healing, only with helping Tova.

It makes more sense that Marcellus wants to bring Cameron and Tova together if he genuinely cares about both of them. While he could help Tova discover the truth about her son without involving Cameron – she simply needs to know her son didn’t take his own life – his efforts to help them both suggest he also understands Cameron’s pain. Changing the relationship between Marcellus and Cameron ultimately improved the story and all the characters, making Remarkably Bright Creatures feel incredibly comforting.
