‘Zootopia 2’ Just Beat the Best ‘Toy Story’ Movie at the Domestic Box Office

The animated movie Zootopia 2 continues to be a huge success in theaters. Released in November 2025, the sequel to the 2016 hit Zootopia has quickly become the highest-grossing American animated film worldwide, earning over $1.8 billion. Although it hasn’t yet surpassed Ne Zha 2‘s impressive $2.25 billion, Zootopia 2 is performing exceptionally well domestically, surpassing many popular Disney Pixar films.

The sequel to Zootopia has become a box office hit, surpassing Toy Story 3 in domestic earnings. Both films have grossed around $415 million, but Zootopia 2 currently has a slight lead of $150,000. The animated movie is now aiming to beat The Lion King‘s domestic record of $423 million. However, it’s unlikely to become the highest-grossing animated film overall, as that title currently belongs to 2024’s Inside Out 2, which earned a remarkable $652 million.

If you haven’t seen Zootopia 2 yet, it brings back Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde! The movie follows the couple after the excitement of falling in love has settled, and their work as partners has become more established. They find themselves working outside the law, going against the Zootopia Police Department, to track down a secretive reptile who could endanger the whole city.

Will ‘Zootopia’ Get a Threequel?

Both Zootopia and its sequel, Zootopia 2, have been huge successes with audiences and critics, making another sequel very likely. Zootopia 2 is currently in theaters and has already become the highest-grossing American film worldwide, so it’s no surprise Disney Pixar is already planning a follow-up.

Disney hasn’t officially announced Zootopia 3, but rumors suggest it’s currently in development. Directors Jared Bush and Byron Howard are reportedly involved, though this hasn’t been confirmed. The movie is currently predicted to be released in 2030, but it’s important to remember this is just a rumor. If true, this would mean a much shorter wait for the sequel than the nine years fans had to wait between the first Zootopia movie and its continuation.
