Be warned, the following contains spoilers for Zootopia 2! Surprisingly, this Disney movie aimed at families originally had a four-minute scene inspired by the thriller The Silence of the Lambs. The film is full of hidden references, or Easter eggs – including a nod to Pixar’s Ratatouille, where a rat is revealed to be the chef when a lion’s hat falls off.
In an interview with Variety, co-director Jared Bush revealed a nod to The Silence of the Lambs. He explained that the imprisoned Mayor Bellwether was intentionally designed to evoke the character of Hannibal Lecter, famously portrayed by Anthony Hopkins.
Director Bush explained the scene originally lasted four minutes and featured characters precisely repeating the dialogue between Hannibal Lecter and Clarice Starling from their first encounter in the 1991 film. He ultimately decided it was too much and feared it would bore a modern audience. You can find his full explanation below.
Let me tell you, that opening scene was a beast – originally clocking in at four minutes! We painstakingly recreated the very first meeting between Hannibal Lecter and Clarice, line by line. Seriously, we even matched the guard’s directions – “All the way down the left, stay to the right.” It was all about getting every detail just right.
That’s where we go, and now we have lost our younger audience members.
I was so relieved to see they handled that Silence of the Lambs nod with a light touch in the final cut – it was a clever reference, but didn’t become this huge, drawn-out sequence. It’s fascinating how Bellwether’s escape mirrors Hannibal Lecter’s, though in a much more accidental way! Instead of a brilliant plan, she just happens to get out when Nick Wilde causes a jailbreak. Thankfully, Nick and Judy do manage to catch her again in that little scene after the credits, which was a nice touch.
The popular horror movie The Shining seems to have inspired several hidden details in Zootopia 2. Directors Bush and Byron Howard have confirmed that the Lynxley manor and its large maze were inspired by the Overlook Hotel and its famous hedge maze. There’s even a scene referencing Jack Nicholson’s character, with the character Pawbert appearing similarly unhinged.
Reviews for Zootopia 2 are overwhelmingly positive, with a 91% rating from critics and a 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Molly Freeman of ScreenRant calls it a well-crafted mystery that’s both funny and heartwarming, keeping viewers of all ages entertained.
If the filmmakers had kept the four-minute scene referencing Silence of the Lambs, they likely would have lost some viewers, particularly younger ones, who wouldn’t have understood it. While adults would have appreciated the nod to the original film, it wasn’t essential to the plot, so it was a risk they decided to avoid.
One reason Disney animated films are so successful is their ability to appeal to both children and adults. With generally positive reviews for Zootopia 2 and a strong start at the box office, Disney appears to have found that sweet spot again.
