Following the conclusion of Blue Bloods, the show’s universe is growing with a new series called Boston Blue. Donnie Wahlberg is returning as Detective Danny Reagan, and we’ve seen familiar faces like Bridget Moynahan and Marisa Ramirez reprise their roles. However, Danny’s son, Sean, is now being played by a different actor, and the actor taking on the role is now responding to criticism about the recast.
Andrew Terraciano played Sean throughout all fourteen seasons of Blue Bloods, so fans were surprised when Mika Amonsen was cast in the same role for Boston Blue. The show’s creators, Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier, explained the decision, stating they wanted to begin Boston Blue already in progress and demonstrate that several years had passed since Blue Bloods ended.
Despite thoroughly preparing to play Sean Reagan and aiming to match the original actor’s performance, fans haven’t fully embraced Amonsen in the role. He recently discussed the situation with Us Weekly, and pointed out at least one positive aspect.
There’s definitely been some negative feedback, but looking past it, I see a lot of fans supporting Sean and saying they really liked the character I played – or my take on it.
After Andrew Terraciano played Sean for 14 years, it’s understandable that fans have strong feelings about the character being played by someone new. Despite this, many are already supporting Mika Amonsen in the role, even though he’s only appeared in a few episodes of Boston Blue. Amonsen seems to be taking any negative reactions in stride, and he’s encouraged by the fans who are embracing the change.
It’s taken some getting used to seeing Sean in a new light, but the actor is doing a great job with the role. As a viewer, I’m enjoying seeing different facets of this well-loved character as he navigates life as a new police officer. And with Sean now living with his friend and partner, Jonah, and a complicated new relationship with Xochitl Gomez’s character, his personal life is definitely full of drama.

It’s unclear how the recent casting changes will affect other characters on Blue Bloods, particularly Jack Regan, played by Tony Terraciano. Given that he’s the older Regan sibling, it would be logical for him to appear in Boston sometime. However, whether or when we’ll see other familiar faces, including Tom Selleck as Frank Reagan, is still unknown.
You can watch all 14 seasons of Blue Bloods on Paramount+, letting fans revisit Tony Terraciano’s performance as Sean. Meanwhile, new episodes of Boston Blue air Fridays at 10 p.m. Eastern on CBS, where viewers can follow what happens with Mika Amonsen’s take on the character.
