Henry Cavill might have gotten the part of Superman because of a single photograph. Zack Snyder revealed that a picture of Cavill wearing the classic Superman suit made the decision to cast him a simple one.
Zack Snyder shared a photo on Instagram of Henry Cavill in the original Superman suit, calling it ‘undeniable.’ The image shows Cavill standing powerfully against a cloudy sky, the Superman logo brightly lit and his cape flowing in the wind. He followed up with a close-up of Cavill’s face. Snyder explained that these images were shown to Warner Bros., and ‘everyone agreed’ – this is where the project truly started.
Henry Cavill became a major star playing Clark Kent/Superman in the DC Extended Universe, beginning with his initial appearance. He continued in the role with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Justice League (2017), and even made a brief, uncredited appearance in Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam in 2022. Most viewers and critics responded favorably to Cavill’s performance as Superman, with many acknowledging he was a highlight even if they weren’t fans of the DCEU’s generally darker tone.
Henry Cavill’s time playing Superman was a dream role, but it ended on a disappointing note as the DC movie universe struggled to gain traction. Because Superman was a popular part of the DC Extended Universe, a follow-up to Man of Steel remained stuck in development and was eventually cancelled when James Gunn took charge and restarted DC’s films as the DC Universe. In December 2022, Cavill announced he wouldn’t be continuing as Superman, although rumors suggest he might appear in Gunn’s new DC world as a different character, much like Jason Momoa, who previously played Aquaman and is now
Okay, so even though Henry Cavill isn’t playing Superman anymore, he’s still huge in Hollywood! I was so excited to see him in that new Guy Ritchie war movie, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, and then he totally popped up unexpectedly in a Marvel movie, which was a fun surprise. And it doesn’t stop there – he’s got a Voltron live-action film coming up, plus he’s going to be back for Enola Holmes 3 with Millie Bobby Brown. Seriously, the guy is everywhere, and I can’t wait to see what he does next!
James Gunn’s New Superman Has a Bright Future in the DCU
While Henry Cavill leaving his role as Superman opened doors for him to explore other opportunities, it also created a chance for a new actor to shine. David Corenswet recently starred as Superman in the first film released under James Gunn’s DC Universe, and it was a major success. The movie earned over $600 million globally, performing better than both of Marvel’s recent releases: Thunderbolts ($382 million) and The Fantastic Four: First Steps ($521 million).
David Corenswet is just beginning his journey as Superman. After the movie’s huge success, James Gunn quickly announced plans for a sequel, titled Man of Tomorrow, and even hinted at future storylines. Filming is expected to start in early 2025, with the movie slated for release in theaters on July 9, 2027.
