Yellowstone Star Kelly Reilly’s 19-Year-Old Supernatural Movie Getting TV Remake

Kelly Reilly’s horror movie Puffballis getting the TV treatment.

Kelly Reilly has been in the news lately, both for returning to her well-loved role as Beth Dutton in the new series Dutton Ranch, and for one of her previous roles being adapted into a TV show. She’s joined by Cole Hauser, who plays Rip Wheeler, bringing the popular couple back to screens.

According to Deadline, the 2007 horror film Puffball is being turned into a TV series. This announcement comes almost 20 years after the movie’s initial, limited release. The film, directed by Nicolas Roeg, starred Malcolm McDowell as an architect who unknowingly stumbles into a dangerous, otherworldly situation.

The film Puffball, based on the Fey Weldon novel, tells the story of a young architect who moves to a remote and unsettling valley in Ireland to build a house. She unexpectedly becomes pregnant, and soon finds herself facing danger as local farmers conspire against her unborn child, forcing her to fight for her life.

Starring Miranda Richardson, Rita Tushingham, Donald Sutherland, William Houston, and Oscar Pearce, the film Puffball had a small release in February 2008, following its debut at a film festival the previous year. While it’s not currently available for streaming, you can find it on DVD.

The script for the upcoming television adaptation of Puffball will be written by Morgan Lloyd Malcom, the Olivier Award-winning playwright behind Emilia. She’s also known for her work on the Netflix thriller Obsession, featuring Richard Armitage, and the psychological film The Wasp. Currently, no network is attached to the project and casting hasn’t been announced. The series is still in early development, so it will be some time before it reaches viewers.

The story follows Liffey and Richard, a couple from London who move to the countryside hoping to have children. They feel a sense of envy towards their neighbors, Mabs and Tucker, who already have a large family. This jealousy leads Mabs to manipulate her husband, Tucker, into having an affair with Liffey. However, her plan for revenge takes an unexpected turn when Liffey becomes pregnant.

Even if the Puffball series gets made – and that’s not always a sure thing – a TV show might be a better way to tell the story of one of Reilly’s first roles and fully explore what drove the plot of her lesser-known horror film.
