Wonder Man Will Be a Very ‘Different’ MCU Show, Says Yahya Abdul-Mateen II

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II recently revealed some details about the upcoming Marvel show, Wonder Man, and fans are sure to be thrilled!

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is set to star as Simon Williams in Wonder Man, a new Marvel series debuting on Disney+ in January. The show is being created by Andrew Guest and Destin Daniel Cretton, who also directed Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

What did Yahya Abdul-Mateen II say about Wonder Man?

In an interview with Empire Magazine, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II described the upcoming Wonder Man series as having a very unique tone, unlike anything else seen in Marvel’s TV shows or movies. He explained that they’re aiming for something new and playful, with a sense of self-awareness.

The show acknowledges the current oversaturation of superhero content, but that’s more of a side element. The real heart of the series is the personal journey of an actor and the strong friendships he develops along the way.

Ben Kingsley is coming back as Trevor Slattery for the new Marvel series, and Arian Moayed will reprise his role as P. Cleary from the Department of Damage Control. The show will also star X Mayo, Zlatko Burić, Olivia Thirlby, and Byron Bowers. The series will have eight episodes, directed by Cretton, James Ponsoldt, Tiffany Johnson, and Steaa Meghie.

Wonder Man follows Simon Williams, an up-and-coming actor trying to make it big in Hollywood. He crosses paths with Trevor Slattery, a former star whose best days might be over. When they both learn that a famous director, Von Kovak, is rebooting the classic superhero movie Wonder Man, they fiercely compete for roles. The story offers a look at what really happens behind the scenes in the entertainment world.

Marvel Studios’ Wonder Man premieres on Disney+ on January 27, 2026.
