Why A $39 Million Horror Sequel Flop Is Dominating Netflix’s Charts

Blumhouse predicted big success for M3GAN 2.0 when it was released in theaters last year. The sequel was fast-tracked after the first M3GAN film became a surprising hit in 2022. Despite a modest $12 million budget, the original M3GAN earned an impressive $181.8 million worldwide, making a quick return for the dancing, killer AI robot a logical decision.

When M3GAN 2 came out last June, it didn’t do well. Despite having a larger budget (between $15 and $25 million), being released during a popular summer movie season, and plans for a spin-off movie called Soulm8te which was already completed, the sequel failed. M3GAN 2 received poor reviews and earned only $39 million worldwide.

Blumhouse’s recent project didn’t go well, and Jason Blum explained they misjudged how interested audiences would be. As a result, the studio cancelled the film. However, six months later, plans for M3GAN 2.0 are back on track.

M3GAN 2.0 Has Been Netflix’s #1 Movie For Days

I was so excited when M3GAN came to Netflix on January 26th, after being on Peacock! It really seemed to be what the film needed. Seriously, by the next morning it was the most-watched movie in the US – everyone was finally seeing what the hype was about! It’s great to see so many people enjoying it now.

For the past four days, M3GAN 2 has been the most-watched movie on Netflix. It’s currently beating out popular titles like Ben Affleck and Matt Damon’s The Rip, the all-time Netflix hit KPop Demon Hunters, and all the James Bond films.

We don’t have specific numbers on how many people are streaming M3GAN 2 yet. However, the film’s strong performance and popularity on Netflix suggest it’s finally getting the attention Blumhouse anticipated when they first made it.

Why Audiences Are Finally Giving M3GAN 2.0 A Chance

It’s not entirely shocking to see so much buzz around M3GAN 2, despite the first movie not performing well in theaters. The original M3GAN clearly resonated with audiences who enjoyed its blend of science fiction and horror, and its memorable scenes – particularly the AI’s dancing and violent moments – likely left a lasting impression.

The success of the sequel is mostly thanks to how easy Netflix makes it to watch. Instead of having to go to a movie theater at a certain time and buy tickets, people can stream M3GAN 2 whenever they want. They can also pause and continue watching later, which is convenient. Plus, being featured prominently on Netflix’s top charts definitely helps more people discover it.

This suggests people are increasingly open to watching movies on streaming services, even if they didn’t get great reviews. With a critic score of 58% on Rotten Tomatoes, M3GAN 2 didn’t generate a lot of immediate interest, and many viewers are choosing to wait and watch it on a streaming service they already subscribe to – it’s a lower-risk way to see the film.

Viewers on Netflix are really enjoying M3GAN 2.0. Because of its popularity, the streaming service might decide to bring back the previously canceled spin-off show.
