The finale of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple has confused many viewers, especially regarding whether Samson was actually healed. Director Nia DaCosta has offered some insight into what happened with the infected Alpha.
Was Samson cured in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple’s ending
A lot of discussion about the ending of 28 Years Later: Bone Temple focuses on the big change Samson goes through. In the movie, Dr. Ian Kelson, played by Ralph Fiennes, discovers a way to help those infected with the virus. His new treatment – using a mix of morphine and anti-psychotic drugs – dramatically calms Samson down and reduces his violent behavior and mental instability.
The treatment helps Samson, portrayed by Chi Lewis-Parry, become calmer and think more clearly. This is the first time the infected Alpha can communicate effectively and remember his childhood, indicating a significant change in his condition. Even though he continued to fight and was bitten again, he emerged acting completely unlike the other infected individuals, despite having violently defeated them.
Although the changes suggest he appears healthy and no longer affected by the rage virus, DaCosta doesn’t explicitly state that he’s fully recovered.
What Nia DaCosta Said about Samson’s fate in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple
When asked if Samson was fully healed after 28 years, the director clarified that the situation wasn’t so simple.
Director Julius DaCosta told The Hollywood Reporter that Samson hasn’t fully recovered, but the healing he has experienced is lasting. While he’s changed significantly from the violent character we first met in the series, DaCosta stops short of calling him fully human. This is an important distinction – Samson is different, but not entirely the person he once was.
DaCosta’s statements suggest Samson is somewhere on the path between being sick and getting better. While the director believes Samson’s improvement is lasting, he’s hesitant to call it a complete cure, particularly since there’s another movie planned.
The final scene, with Samson back at the Bone Temple and expressing gratitude to Dr. Kelson before he dies, highlights how unclear Samson’s true character is. He seems much calmer and more understanding than he did before, a big change from his previous violent behavior. We’ll get a definitive answer about his transformation when the next movie, 28 Years Later 3, comes out.
