‘Welcome to Wrexham’ Renewed Through Season 8 at FX Ahead of Season 5

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s documentary series, Welcome to Wrexham, has become a big hit for FX. What started as a celebrity-driven project to buy a football club has evolved into a compelling sports series that’s gaining traction – and the stakes are getting higher as Wrexham AFC improves its standing in English football. The show initially laid out specific goals for Reynolds and McElhenney and the team, and now that those goals have been achieved, viewers are curious to see what direction the series will take next.

FX has renewed the series for three more seasons – seasons 6, 7, and 8 – even before season 5 begins airing on May 14th. Rob McElhenney even legally changed his last name last year! This kind of long-term commitment is extremely rare in television today, and it guarantees that Welcome to Wrexham will continue until 2029.

FX had already planned for a fifth season of the show, originally scheduled for late 2025. However, this new order indicates they’re very enthusiastic about the series and want to follow the team’s story for a longer period, both within and outside of the game.

Season 5 of the Wrexham docuseries was already highly anticipated. The new episodes will follow the team’s attempt to climb even higher after achieving three consecutive promotions, now placing them in the Championship – just one step away from the Premier League. It’s rare for a show like this to be renewed for multiple seasons, especially since Wrexham’s story is still developing. Essentially, FX has committed to showing viewers much more of the team’s journey. According to Nick Grad, President of FX Entertainment,

We’re thrilled by the incredible success of Welcome to Wrexham, both for the club and the town itself, and how it’s become a popular and heartwarming TV series. Renewing the show for three more seasons proves the fantastic work of Rob and Ryan and the strong bond they’ve created with fans globally.

Ryan Reynolds announced the show’s success on Instagram, joking that it’s “good for TV” but “bad for blood pressure” – a comment that perfectly explains its appeal. Welcome to Wrexham isn’t popular just because Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are famous. It’s captivating because the team’s ups and downs create constant drama, and the show cares just as much about the town and its fans as it does about its celebrity owners.

Reynolds and Mac stated that receiving a three-season order for a TV series is extremely rare, made possible by the incredible work of their Emmy-winning documentary crew and the amazing success of Wrexham AFC, along with the dedication of everyone involved in creating a historic sports story.

Viewers in the US can still watch the show on FXX and Hulu, and it will remain available on Disney+ for international audiences.

Now that Welcome to Wrexham has proven its staying power, the real question isn’t if the show will continue, but how much success the club will achieve while the cameras are still filming. FX seems confident there’s plenty more of Wrexham’s story to tell, having already committed to three more seasons in addition to the upcoming Season 5.
