Paul Thomas Anderson’s new film, *One Battle After Another*, topped the box office with $22 million in domestic sales during its opening weekend, marking a career high for the director. However, it saw a significant 50% decrease in ticket sales the following week when Taylor Swift’s concert film, *The Official Release Party of a Showgirl*, took the number one spot – a pattern similar to the success of *The Eras Tour* in 2023. Following reports suggesting the Leonardo DiCaprio film might lose the studio $100 million, Warner Bros. responded by highlighting the performance of other films like *A Minecraft Movie* and *Sinners*.
Although *One Battle After Another* has earned $141.9 million so far, it needs to reach $300 million in total to cover its costs, according to Variety. The film cost over $130 million to make and another $70 million to advertise. Because movie theaters and studios split ticket sales evenly, Leonardo DiCaprio will receive a portion of the revenue before the studio recoups its investment.
Variety reports that Warner Bros. is predicted to lose $100 million, a claim linked to the expensive Oscar campaign for Paul Thomas Anderson’s latest film. However, a Warner Bros. spokesperson disputes this, stating the studio is performing strongly with its upcoming 2025 releases.
Warner Bros. disputes claims made by Variety, which were based on unnamed sources and inaccurate financial predictions. Their films, including ‘One Battle After Another,’ have already earned over $4 billion in 2025, proving their success.
While Warner Bros. has generated $4 billion in box office revenue (not profit), the studio highlighted the success of films like *A Minecraft Movie* and *Sinners*. Jared Hess’ adaptation of the popular video game proved to be a major hit, earning $957.8 million and becoming the third highest-grossing film of the year. Ryan Coogler’s horror film also performed well, bringing in $367 million over two strong weekends. Both films significantly boosted Warner Bros.’ box office earnings this year.
Warner Bros. is doing very well, recently reaching a significant box office achievement thanks to original films like *Sinners* and *F1*. They’ve had six movies in a row open with at least $40 million at the box office. What’s particularly impressive is that *Sinners*, *F1*, and *Weapons* weren’t part of any existing franchise or superhero series, yet they still attracted large audiences. This demonstrates that studios don’t always need to rely on remakes, sequels, or spin-offs to guarantee success.
Okay, so One Battle After Another isn’t exactly setting the box office on fire, which is a little worrying. But I heard from someone at Warner Bros. that they’re actually doing okay overall because A Minecraft Movie and Sinners both had really strong openings. Fingers crossed that all the great reviews and awards talk around the new Leonardo DiCaprio movie will help it find a bigger audience once it starts streaming. I’m really hoping it does well!
Make sure to give One Battle After Another a chance, playing in theaters now.
