Few brands are as well-known as when it comes to magical girl anime. While it’s usually associated with large-scale projects, it’s now trying something much smaller in scope.
A new world record has been set for the tiniest handmade sculpture, and it features a beloved character from the anime Sailor Moon. The incredibly detailed sculpture is so small it can fit inside the eye of a needle! Creating it took immense patience and accuracy, but the final result is as dazzling as Sailor Moon herself.
Sailor Moon Wins Biggest New World Record for Smallest Handmade Sculpture
David A. Lindon, a sculptor from Bournemouth, has created a miniature Sailor Moon sculpture that’s unbelievably small – just 1.31 mm by 2.14 mm! This makes it smaller than a quarter of a centimeter in each direction. The sculpture depicts Sailor Moon in her costume, lifting her leg against a night sky background, complete with flowing blonde hair and pink petals. Lindon, who already holds world records for his tiny artworks, has achieved an impressive level of detail in a piece that could easily fit through the eye of a needle.
Lindon created the artwork using incredibly small tools, like tiny chisels and drills. The artist described it as a true passion project, explaining that the work was exhausting. “I pushed myself so hard, slowing my heart rate to the point where it will take months to recover,” Lindon said. He spent entire nights working, focused intently under his Nikon microscope. Remarkably, the sculpture only took two months to finish, which is surprisingly fast considering the immense dedication and detail involved.
This sculpture celebrates both the most famous magical girl and the 70th anniversary of Nakayoshi magazine, the Kodansha publication where the Sailor Moon manga first appeared in the 1990s. Although the magazine has been around for 70 years, the Sailor Moon series itself is newer. Takeuchi’s original manga debuted in late 1991, followed by the anime in 1992. Since then, Sailor Moon has been reimagined with modern anime series, a live-action adaptation, and countless toys, artworks, and other products.
