The late actor Val Kilmer will appear in the upcoming independent film, As Deep as the Grave, thanks to artificial intelligence. While this is expected to generate discussion, Kilmer’s family has approved of his digital appearance in the movie.
On March 18th, it was announced that Val Kilmer would be digitally recreated using AI for his role in the film. Kilmer was originally cast as Father Fintan in Ad Deep as the Grave in 2020, but due to delays in production, he never filmed any scenes. Kilmer has been battling throat cancer for years, but the film’s writer and director, Coerte Voorhees, was committed to including the Top Gun star in the movie.
Val Kilmer Returns via AI for One Last Performance
Voorhees said he’d always envisioned this particular actor in the role, and the part was actually written with him in mind. The character’s background was specifically built around the actor’s Native American roots and his connection to the Southwest. They were prepared to start filming with him, but unfortunately, he was dealing with serious health issues and had to withdraw.
To make this happen, Voorhees worked closely with the Kilmer family, making sure they approved the project first. He received their full support, including from Kilmer’s children, Mercedes and Jack, as well as his estate. While Voorhees anticipated some criticism, speaking with the family reinforced his belief that this was something Val Kilmer truly wanted.
The filmmaker explained that Val’s family repeatedly emphasized how meaningful the movie was to him and how eager he was to participate. Val believed it was an important story he wanted to be associated with, and that support ultimately gave the filmmaker the confidence to move forward, even knowing some might consider the film controversial. It was, at its core, what Val desired.
Mercede Kilmer shared that he consistently viewed new technologies as ways to enhance creative storytelling. She explained that this hopeful approach is being celebrated in this film, which he helped create.
As Deep as the Grave Has the Support of Kilmer’s Family
The film As Deep as the Grave, based on a true story, centers on archaeologists Ann (Abigail Lawrie) and Earl Morris (Tom Felton) as they explore Canyon de Chelly, Arizona, to learn about the history of the Navajo people. Val Kilmer plays a notable role as Father Fintan, and the filmmakers used a combination of family photos and footage from throughout his career to portray the character. They also incorporated recordings of Kilmer’s voice, as the character’s health challenges reflect the actor’s own struggles with speaking after a throat procedure.
Producer John Voorhees explained that the character in the film has tuberculosis, mirroring the actor’s own experience with throat cancer. This allows for a unique connection between the character’s voice and the actor’s real-life condition, creating a powerful link between them.
Val Kilmer, famous for movies like Tombstone, previously used AI technology to recreate his voice as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in the 2022 film Top Gun: Maverick. He collaborated with Sonantic to develop an AI-powered voice for his scenes with Tom Cruise, and expressed his gratitude for the technology at the time.
Communication is essential to being human, and throat cancer has made it hard for people to understand what I’m saying,” Kilmer explained. “Being able to tell my story with a voice that sounds like my own is a truly meaningful opportunity.”
As Deep as the Grave does not yet have a release date.
