Upcoming Spinoff ‘Dutton Ranch’ Is Essentially a Sixth Season of ‘Yellowstone’

While the world of Yellowstone is expanding with several new shows, only one seems poised to directly continue the story of the original series. 1883 and 1923 delved into the history of the Dutton family, revealing how earlier generations fought to secure the land that John Dutton now protects. Another prequel, 1944, is still planned, but the previously connected drama The Madison, starring Michelle Pfeiffer, will now be a separate story outside of the main Yellowstone timeline.

In 2026, Marshals, starring Luke Grimes as Kayce Dutton, became the first successful modern TV spinoff. Though set in the same world as Yellowstone and featuring some returning characters, it felt more like a separate show than a direct continuation. Its focus on police procedures and action set it apart in terms of both style and genre. However, the next Yellowstone spinoff is poised to truly continue the Dutton family story that concluded after five seasons.

‘Dutton Ranch’ Reportedly Feels Like a True Sixth Season of ‘Yellowstone’

The first look at Dutton Ranch suggests it will feel much more like the original Yellowstone than the show Marshals. Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser are returning as Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, now living on their own farm in Texas and seemingly trying to leave their painful past in Montana behind. The cast also includes major stars like Annette Bening, Ed Harris, and Jai Courtney, with Bening playing the main villain.

Beth and Rip will face new challenges protecting their land and way of life, but this time they’ll also have to deal with the consequences of their past actions in Montana. The new series will focus heavily on Beth and Rip, and explore the aftermath of major events from the end of Yellowstone, including their involvement in Jamie Dutton’s death and their efforts to raise Carter. Unlike the previous series, Marshals, which offered a fresh start for Kayce Dutton, this show seems determined to fully confront the characters’ complicated histories.

The new series, Dutton Ranch, strongly captures the feel of Yellowstone, leading many to believe it will effectively continue the story as a sixth season. Director Greg Yaitanes has even confirmed this impression, stating that Dutton Ranch feels very much like another installment of Yellowstone. In an interview with Collider, Yaitanes discussed the possibility of storylines connecting the Marshals universe with Dutton Ranch.

Kayce fits seamlessly into the Dutton Ranch storyline because it feels very similar in style to the original Yellowstone. Many of the people working on Dutton Ranch felt like they were essentially continuing Yellowstone’s sixth season. Meanwhile, the ‘Marshals’ series is more focused on action, guns, and that kind of exciting, genre-driven content.

‘Yellowstone’ Was Never Supposed To End After Five Seasons

Dutton Ranch isn’t what fans would have expected from a sixth season of Yellowstone, though that was the initial idea. Originally, the show was planned to run for seven seasons, which seemed reasonable given the storylines and characters at the midpoint of season five. However, a combination of factors – including the writers’ strike and Kevin Costner’s commitments to his Horizon films – forced a break in production, and it became apparent that the story wasn’t finished and needed more time to reach a satisfying conclusion.

Kevin Costner’s exit from the show unexpectedly led to a shortened final season of Yellowstone, with only a few episodes left to wrap up the story. While the creators did their best to finish things given the limited time, most fans were disappointed with how the series ended. A continuation focusing on the Dutton Ranch could offer a more complete and satisfying conclusion, essentially serving as a sixth season to the original show.
