After receiving positive reviews, the film is coming to Netflix. Directed by Kurtis David Harder, it first premiered at the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival in 2022 and was later available on Shudder in 2023.
As someone who’s been following the horror scene, I’m excited to report that Influencer, which initially gained traction on Shudder, is hitting Netflix in the U.S. on December 1st. Co-written by Harder and Tesh Guttikonda, it’s a welcome addition to their already strong collection of horror and thriller films – and everything in between!
The film centers on Madison (Emily Tennant), a social media influencer who’s down on her luck. While backpacking alone in Thailand, she encounters the enigmatic CW (Cassandra Naud). At first, Madison is drawn to CW’s relaxed lifestyle, but she quickly discovers a troubling side to CW’s intentions. The cast also includes Rory J. Saper, Justin Sams, Sara Canning, and Raul Spurrier.
I was completely blown away by Influencer! Ever since I saw it premiere at the festival, and now that it’s available on Shudder, everyone’s been talking about how genuinely terrifying and smart it is. It’s got an incredible 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and rightly so! Critics are really connecting with the film’s clever writing, the truly frightening moments, and the important message it delivers.
While audiences weren’t as enthusiastic as expected – the movie received a 68% score on Shudder’s Popcornmeter – it’s proven popular on the streaming service, leading to a sequel called Influencers. The sequel will premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival in July and will be available to stream on Shudder starting December 12th.
The sequel to Influencers is getting a fantastic reception so far, currently holding a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 15 reviews. It’s important to remember this score could change as more critics share their opinions.
If you liked Influencer and want to see more of director Ryan Harder’s work, check out his 2019 film Spiral, which is also available on Shudder. He also produced V/H/S/94 (2021), a very popular original film for Shudder, showing he works closely with the streaming platform.
Now that the Netflix show Influencer is coming out, a lot more people will be watching it. This will likely increase Harder’s popularity, and could also help actors like Naud and Tennant become even more well-known.
Having the film on Netflix will likely benefit those who create online content. People who liked the first movie’s thought-provoking themes and creepy vibe might be inspired to subscribe to Shudder to find out what happens next. This could potentially open the door for a third film in the series.
