Sam Worthington is known for playing Jake Sully in James Cameron’s Avatar movies, but Cameron recently revealed that two other actors were also considered for the part.
What MCU star almost played Jake Sully in Avatar?
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, director James Cameron discussed the making of his films, including how Jake Sully was cast. Though Cameron always favored Sam Worthington for the part, 20th Century Fox reportedly preferred Channing Tatum – who later played Gambit in Marvel movies – for the role.
I kept wanting to cast Sam, but the studio didn’t agree. The people at Fox preferred other actors – Channing Tatum was one of them. They were happy with his work and thought he’d be a good fit for the role. Ultimately, Channing Tatum was a strong contender.
Cameron explained that Worthington’s performance and delivery were so compelling, they made him feel like he’d follow Sully anywhere—even into a fight with impossible odds. Although it initially took some effort to refine Worthington’s Australian accent, Cameron was ultimately pleased with the result.
Okay, so I just got a first look at ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash,’ and it’s promising! James Cameron is back at the helm, co-writing this time with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. We’re seeing a lot of familiar faces – Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, even Stephen Lang returns – alongside some fantastic new additions like Kate Winslet and Cliff Curtis. What’s really exciting is what Cameron has said about the story. He’s diving deeper into the Na’vi world, showing us cultures we haven’t seen before – specifically, a people he calls the ‘Ash People’ who represent fire. He wants to move beyond just the ‘good guys’ portrayal we’ve gotten so far and show a more complex side to the Na’vi. It sounds like he’s really expanding the universe, and I’m eager to see how it all plays out.
Avatar: Fire and Ash is set to release on December 19, 2025.
