Beverly Hills, what a thrill!
Nearly four decades after the beloved 1980s comedy (my wife—who has excellent taste in movies—reminds me!), a sequel to Troop Beverly Hills is finally happening.
Cameron Diaz is in talks to join the cast of Clea DuVall’s upcoming film, Troop, which DuVall also wrote and will direct, according to Deadline.
The movie Troop Beverly Hills, directed by Jeff Kanew, features Shelley Long as a wealthy Beverly Hills mother who surprisingly becomes the leader of a Wilderness Girls troop—a group similar to the Girl Scouts.
Though the movie wasn’t successful in theaters when it came out, it slowly gained a dedicated following with kids who watched it repeatedly on TV. It’s unusual because it features a female lead in a comedy style that usually focuses on male characters – think of movies like Animal House or Bad News Bears, but with a different perspective.
If a follow-up film is made, it will be one of Cameron Diaz’s most significant projects since she started acting again after a ten-year break. She recently returned with the Netflix film Back in Action, alongside Jamie Foxx, and also appears in Jonah Hill’s Outcome, which debuts this weekend on Apple TV+. Plus, she’s set to voice Princess Fiona once more in the next Shrek movie, currently planned for release in the summer of 2027.
I knew exactly what my wife would ask when I told her about the movie: “If it’s a sequel, could Shelley Long be in it?” A recent article on Yahoo! said that while Shelley Long still worked in Hollywood until the 2020s, she largely stepped away from public appearances after her 2021 film, The Cleaner. Still, maybe they could convince her to make a quick appearance if they asked nicely.
