Many athletes become broadcasters after they retire from their sport – we’ve seen it across almost every field, with examples like Tony Romo, Shaquille O’Neal, Daniel Cormier, and Tara Lipinski. But being a great player doesn’t automatically make someone a good analyst, and it seems Tom Brady’s mom told him the same thing everyone else did about his new job at Fox Sports.
It seems logical that someone deeply familiar with a sport would be a great commentator. But knowing the game isn’t enough – you also need to be able to explain it in a way that’s both clear and interesting. Tom Brady received a lot of criticism when he first started broadcasting, but most people agree he’s improved significantly this season. He even shared with Fox News Digital that someone close to him feels the same way:
My mom actually said the same thing. It’s been great getting settled in and more comfortable here. Like anyone starting a new job, there’s a lot to learn at first, and my first year has definitely been a learning experience. This year, I’ve been constantly refining how I prepare.
Although Tom Brady is often called the greatest NFL quarterback ever, he faced some initial challenges switching from playing the game to analyzing it on television. As fellow analyst Terry Bradshaw noted, it was hard to predict how Brady would perform as a commentator because his personality in that role was unknown.
Tom Brady’s connection to the Las Vegas Raiders – he had a partial ownership stake – likely added to the scrutiny he faced. Fans often wondered if he was breaking the rules whenever he argued with a referee’s decision.
Shaquille O’Neal actually predicted this would happen, saying Tom Brady would become comfortable as a commentator in his second or third year. It’s no surprise he’s so insightful – that’s why they call him ‘The Big Aristotle’!
- Eli Manning pranked Peyton with a ruthlessly brutal gift.
- Travis Kelce says it’s “obviously fucked up” the Chiefs missed the playoffs.
- Danny DeVito reacts live to kicker’s whiffed field goal attempt.
- I tried watching Thursday Night Football’s Prime Vision and had to turn it off.
- Acting in State Farm commercials helped Patrick Mahomes with trick play.
Shaquille O’Neal encouraged Tom Brady to rely on his playing experience, be authentic, and share his stories. It’s possible Brady took this advice to heart. Now, he’s formed a great on-air partnership with Kevin Burkhardt as Fox’s lead NFL announcers, and seems to be genuinely enjoying the role. He recently praised Burkhardt, as well as the entire broadcast team – including Tom Rinaldi, Erin Andrews, and all the crew working behind the scenes.
He expressed his strong affection for his teammates and praised his managers. It’s easy to see why his mother, like so many others, would be incredibly proud of his positive and unselfish character.
Don’t miss the chance to hear the commentary of a seven-time Super Bowl winner this weekend! He’ll be joining Kevin Burkhardt to call the NFC Divisional Playoff game between the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks. The game starts at 8 p.m. on Saturday, January 17th, and will be broadcast on Fox.
