The new Apple TV+ series, Pluribus, is captivating viewers. After a strong start with its first two episodes, the post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller released its third episode, “Grenade,” leaving fans with even more questions about Carol’s (Rhea Seehorn) journey and the strange world around her. Eagle-eyed viewers might have spotted a very brief, but potentially important, detail in a flashback scene that could hint at how the story ultimately unfolds.
Carol Says She Froze Her Eggs
This Could Be More Important Than You Think

The third episode, titled “Grenade,” opens with a memory of Carol and her wife, Helen (Miriam Shor), on a lavish trip Helen planned. Carol isn’t thrilled to be there, but they’re at an incredible ice hotel in Norway – a building made entirely of ice and kept frozen by the cold weather. This scene takes place 2,600 days before the world changes for Carol.
Walking to their room with an attendant, they immediately noticed how cold it was. He explained it would feel peaceful once they adjusted. Helen was fascinated, but Carol wished she hadn’t left her cozy, warm house. When they entered the suite – a few degrees below zero – Carol discovered even the bed was made of ice, and she really missed the comfort of home.
The biggest surprise comes in a quick line Carol says to Helen: she mentions she “could’ve saved that hundred grand and frozen my eggs right here.” This reveals Carol had previously frozen her eggs, probably with the hope of having children with Helen someday. However, there might be a deeper meaning behind this comment than we realize.
The first two episodes revealed the cause of the shared consciousness affecting most of humanity. It’s not a traditional virus, but a sequence of RNA that essentially links everyone’s minds together. Carol and eleven other people are unaffected, and we don’t know why – nobody else does either, or they would have already brought Carol into the collective. To figure out what makes them immune, they’ll probably need to analyze Carol’s DNA. The question is, how can they obtain it?
Carol’s Frozen Eggs Could Be the Cure for the Hive Mind in ‘Pluribus’

Carol’s decision to freeze her eggs might be relevant here. We learned from the scientists trying to recreate the genetic sequence – before the rat bite – that they were working with a virus that inserts its DNA into the host’s cells as they divide. Essentially, this virus copies itself along with the host’s DNA.
With this information, two outcomes are possible. The collective consciousness could take Carol’s eggs, study her DNA, pinpoint what makes her unique, and then find a way to incorporate her into their group, essentially erasing her individual identity. Alternatively, the eggs might not reveal the secret to her immunity or the key to absorbing her—instead, they could actually contain the answer to a possible cure.
If Carol remembers she has frozen eggs with her DNA and can get to them, she might be able to work with a scientist to identify the part of her DNA that makes her immune to the virus. They could then replicate that component and give it to everyone else, making them immune too. This is how she believes she can save humanity and return things to normal.
A key point to consider is that Carol discovers, at the end of Episode 3, that these connected people are physically incapable of harming living creatures. This suggests her frozen eggs might be safe from them. Furthermore, they may be unable to interfere with her plan to use the collected DNA to restore the world and everyone’s individuality.
Although it would take a clever scientist to figure it out, it’s still possible. We strongly suspect Carol’s quick mention of spending $100,000 to freeze her eggs was deliberately included in the story. It was a short comment that most people might have overlooked, but it could be very important to the ending. It’s unclear if this detail will ultimately help or hurt Carol.
Could Carol’s Frozen Eggs Be a Red Herring?

Apple TV
As a big fan, I’ve been thinking about this one line, and honestly, it’s been bugging me. It could be nothing, just a throwaway moment. But knowing Vince Gilligan, the creator, I suspect he put it there on purpose – to make us wonder if there’s something more going on beneath the surface. It definitely feels like it has a bigger meaning, doesn’t it?
Given that the show deeply explores what defines a person – their individuality and ability to make their own choices – any reference to DNA is likely intentional and significant.
It’s still unclear what’s happening with Carol and the strange new developments in Pluribus, so viewers will have to keep watching to find out. With the show receiving great reviews, fans are excited to see how the story unfolds. While many hope for a satisfying ending, a cliffhanger is possible since the series has already been renewed for a second season. The meaning of the mysterious eggs remains unknown, but they’ve definitely been introduced as a key element. You can watch Pluribus now on Apple TV.
