With so many compelling true crime documentaries on Netflix, The Perfect Neighbor stands out as one of the best. It begins with seemingly minor incidents – an elderly woman repeatedly calling the police on children in her neighborhood – but quickly escalates into a devastating American tragedy that impacts everyone involved. The story is powerfully told through actual footage from body cameras, cell phones, and police interrogations.
Director Geeta Gandbhir’s approach makes The Perfect Neighbor a standout documentary, both among upcoming releases and recent films in general. This is especially true during a particularly shocking and emotionally devastating scene about halfway through the new Netflix documentary.
The Perfect Neighbor Is One Of The Rawest True Crime Docs I’ve Ever Watched
I was intrigued when I learned about The Perfect Neighbor and its fresh take on true crime documentaries. I soon discovered it was unlike anything I’d ever seen – a remarkably raw, emotionally challenging, and original film. Unlike most documentaries that rely on dramatic music, interviews, and narration, director Geeta Gandbhir chose to use only footage directly captured at the scene of the crime.
The documentary detailing the events leading up to Susan Lorincz shooting Ajike Owens in June 2023 is captivating. It powerfully shows repeated police visits responding to ongoing disturbances, making you feel like you’re witnessing everything alongside the officers, neighbors, and others involved.

Witnessing The Aftermath Of Ajike Owens’ Death Through Body Cam Footage Was Heartbreaking
Even though viewers knew something bad was likely to happen in The Perfect Neighbor, nothing could have prepared them for the intense sadness and pain following Ajike Owens’ death. The scene is chaotic and deeply upsetting as police and paramedics struggle to help her and understand what happened. The moment her two sons learn of their mother’s death is particularly heartbreaking.
I’ll never forget the look on their faces – the pain in their eyes, and how completely devastated they were when they heard the news. It felt intrusive, like I shouldn’t have been witnessing such raw emotion and grief.

I Honestly Don’t Think A More Orthodox Approach Would Have Been As Impactful
There are a lot of true crime documentaries on Netflix these days, with new ones appearing constantly. But while many are interesting, The Perfect Neighbor really stands out because of how it’s made. It’s raw and avoids typical documentary techniques like flashy visuals or dramatic music, which surprisingly makes it incredibly gripping. It draws you in and keeps you hooked, and I believe this unique approach makes it far more powerful and memorable than a conventional documentary would be.
With a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, The Perfect Neighbor is shaping up to be a truly outstanding documentary – one that will likely stay with viewers long after they’ve seen it.
