Sarah Michelle Gellar recently told reporters at a Neiman Marcus event that she regrets saying she wouldn’t revisit the show. A continuation of the series, long rumored, was officially announced earlier this year, and filming for the first episode has already begun. Gellar hinted that the new season will feature both familiar faces and newcomers to the story.
Gellar said returning to ‘Buffy’ felt incredibly strange, because it was something she never imagined doing. She joked that she’d repeatedly said ‘never,’ but realized you should never say never. She imagines people will find old interviews of her saying she was too old and that a return would involve ‘Buffy with a walker.’
The actress explained again how director Chloé Zhao persuaded her to reprise her role in Sunnydale. She said Zhao had a compelling vision and spoke with such enthusiasm about both the idea and the show itself, that it became clear we really need those heroic characters and the hope they represent, especially now.

New Fans Don’t Need to Watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Enjoy the Reboot
The world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is surprisingly intricate. The TV show began in 1997, inspired by the 1992 film it shares a name with, and was created by Joss Whedon. Following the show’s popularity, the franchise expanded with Angel, which started airing alongside Buffy in its third season. Since the original show ended, numerous novels, comics, and other adaptations have been released, and some of these stories are officially considered part of the Buffy narrative.
According to a recent interview with Sarah Michelle Gellar, the upcoming Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale aims to appeal to both longtime fans and new viewers. Gellar explained that while the show will include plenty of references for those familiar with the original series—just like the original had—it’s also designed to be accessible to people who haven’t seen Buffy before. Ryan Kiera Armstrong will play the new Buffy.
The Buffy the Vampire Slayer sequel series, New Sunnydale, doesn’t have a release date yet.
