Okay, so I just discovered this amazing zombie movie that‘s blowing up right now, even though it came out a while ago! It’s totally different than everything else I’ve seen, especially compared to something like The Walking Dead. But like all the really great zombie flicks, it still has that suspense, plenty of scary moments, and some seriously creative and gruesome zombie designs. It really delivers on the thrills!

As a huge fan of zombie flicks, I’ve seen a lot of great ones over the years! Titles like Zombieland, 28 Days Later, Dawn of the Dead, and Train to Busan are always at the top of my list. What I love is that there really is something for everyone in the genre. Even though it’s not currently having its biggest moment, we still get some genuinely thrilling releases every year. Of course, for a whole decade, The Walking Dead was the face of zombies – it really dominated the scene!

While many zombie shows exist, The Walking Dead became the most popular, attracting tens of millions of viewers each season at its height. Over eleven seasons, the show featured memorable characters like Rick Grimes, Daryl Dixon, and Glenn Rhee, and its realistic portrayal of survival shaped zombie stories for a whole generation.

It’s noteworthy how the current zombie movie sensation on streaming differs significantly from what made The Walking Dead popular. That film, World War Z, starring Brad Pitt as Gerry Lane, a former UN investigator, first hit theaters on June 21, 2013.

World War Z Is Experiencing A Streaming Resurgence At The Perfect Time

Despite being released 13 years ago and earning $540 million in theaters, the zombie film World War Z is now incredibly popular on streaming. As of today, it’s become the most-watched movie on Paramount+ globally, surpassing Glen Powell’s The Running Man. World War Z is currently trending in 18 countries and is the top movie on Paramount+ in all but one of those nations, beating out other popular titles like Regretting You, Night Hunter starring Henry Cavill, and Top Gun: Maverick.

Although World War Z is available to stream on Paramount+ in the US, it isn’t currently among the platform’s most popular titles – Top Gun: Maverick holds the top spot. This comes at a good time for the zombie film, as Paramount recently announced a new World War Z movie is in the works, slated for release in 2026. It’s still unclear whether Brad Pitt will reprise his role as Lane in a direct sequel or if the new film will be a separate story within the same universe.

World War Z Completely Differs From The Walking Dead

The movie World War Z stands apart from The Walking Dead, which has become a major hit in the zombie genre. Unlike the slow, overwhelming hordes in The Walking Dead, the zombies in World War Z are incredibly fast and agile – they can even climb over obstacles and scale walls, like the fortifications of Jerusalem. While The Walking Dead later introduced faster zombies in some of its shows, the original series focused on slower, but dangerous, undead that threatened in large numbers.

A major difference between these two zombie films lies in the search for a cure. In World War Z, Brad Pitt’s character, Gerry Lane, is completely focused on finding one. The movie shows him discovering a way to disguise humans from the zombies by studying their behavior.

The first season of The Walking Dead briefly explored the possibility of a cure for the zombie virus, but quickly dismissed it, focusing instead on what it truly means to survive. World War Z takes a very different approach, but has still proven to be a popular zombie story, and is now finding a new audience as a hit on Paramount+.
