Christopher Nolan, the director known for acclaimed films like Inception and Oppenheimer, is adapting Homer’s The Odyssey into a movie starring Matt Damon. His thirteenth film is currently scheduled for release in July 2026.
Christopher Nolan recently told Empire Online what sets his new film, The Odyssey, apart from his previous work. While the movie features larger settings and prominent actors, Nolan highlighted the sheer amount of film used during the 91-day shoot: over two million feet. Much of the filming took place at sea, following Odysseus (played by Damon) and his crew on their journey.
Honestly, filming out on the open sea was incredible – and really intense! I’ve spent the last four months working on the water, and we actually had the actors playing Odysseus’ crew out there battling real waves in the actual locations we imagined. It’s just… massive. Sometimes terrifying, sometimes beautiful, and always changing. We really wanted to show how unbelievably difficult those ancient voyages must have been, and that sense of taking a huge risk, venturing into a world where no one knew what was out there.
Nolan directed and wrote the upcoming film, The Odyssey, which is based on the famous Greek poem from the 8th century B.C. The movie features a star-studded cast including Matt Damon, Mia Goth, Benny Safdie, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Tom Holland, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Elliot Page, Jon Bernthal, John Leguizamo, and Lupita Nyong’o. The Odyssey will tell the story of Odysseus’s journey home, and Damon was one of the first actors to be announced for the project.
Matt Damon Praises The Odyssey
Anne Hathaway will star as Penelope, the Queen of Ithaca and wife of Odysseus. Tom Holland, known for his role in Spider-Man, will play Telemachus, and Mia Goth, from Frankenstein, will portray Melantho, a palace maid. This upcoming epic is groundbreaking as it’s the first movie ever filmed entirely with IMAX cameras. The filmmakers have described the experience as the best of their careers and anticipate a massively entertaining, mythic film.
The actor hinted the film centers on Odysseus’s long trip back home, explaining he was particularly drawn to the Emily Wilson translation’s opening line, ‘Tell me about a complicated man.’ He highlighted Odysseus’s intelligence, resourcefulness, and cunning, noting that the character is far more than just a warrior—he’s a brilliant thinker and a master of strategy.
The Odyssey will hit theaters on July 17, 2026.
